Buena suerte.

On my first playthrough of The Witcher, but was annoyed when the game crashed at the exact same spot every single time. I'd be attacking a Salamander (?) mob near the stairs at the start and it would just crash to the desktop every time without fail. After some Googling and seeing numerous "fixes" which involve everything from changing your underwear to performing a prayer ritual (I jest) I finally discovered the cause of the problem and found a fix that at least works for me and doesn't involve changing lots of Windows or graphics settings.

FYI, I'm running on a decent rig with everything on its max setting. I believe this is contributing to the fact that the game is using (and hitting) a 2GB 32bit executable RAM limit. There are some fixes out there, and on this board, that involve the use of "bcdedit" to increase the amount of RAM allocated to processes (usually 3GB) - but I don't like this as a solution because it's too general, rather than specific to the application (The Witcher).

Instead, and what worked for me, was the use of the "4GB Patch" found here:
http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

Description: This very little tool patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms.

Simply run the 4gb_patch.exe and when the window pops up asking you to navigate for an .exe to patch, provide it with the following:

<Your Steam Installation Path>\SteamApps\common\The Witcher Enhanced Edition\System\witcher.exe

After applying the patch and checking 'Task Manager', I could see The Witcher using just over 2GB RAM and no longer crashing at all. Hopefully this helps someone who may be having the same issue and doesn't want to change default Windows settings.

EDIT: This post is to address the crashing of the game back to the desktop when you are running a 64 bit version of Windows. If you are experiencing any other error than random crashing, or errors such as "minimum requirements not met" then you need to look at other threads and solutions, such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLjxhB0-s2A

Please do not assume this thread is a one-stop-shop for every error you will encounter in this game, because it is not. Its only purpose is to try and provide a fix to crashing back to desktop under Windows 64 bit.

Saludos!

Running on Windows 10. This solved all my problems, including minimum requirements, failing to run at all, and crashing in the exact same spot every time. I do still occasionally get the random crash, but it happens like once every four or five sessions. I can live with it. Save often.

steamapps/common/The Witcher Enhanced Edition/launcher.exe
<- set to Windows 7 compatibility
<- set to run as Admin

steamapps/common/The Witcher Enhanced Edition/System/witcher.exe
<- set to Windows 7 compatibility
<- set to run as Admin

Finally, when you run the game, do NOT use the Steam shortcut. Go to:
steamapps/common/The Witcher Enhanced Edition/
...and run launcher.exe manually.
