Rated 18+ in Europe by PEGI!
And M in USA. Used to be T in USA and only PEGI-16 in Europe now its both M and PEGI-18, holy hell what this game will be ultra violent!

Thankfully. I'd hate for Batman's method to be drinking tea with all his enemies to reconcile their differences.

This isn't exactly news.

According to the ESRB website, it's because of some torture scenes that are featured in the game. WB wanted to remove them, but apparently they're crucial to the plot, so we get a higher rating. Other than that, it's the same as the other games in terms of violence, blood, swearing, etc.

Apparently it will be heavy on:

Profanity
Blood
Gore
Sadism
Extreme violence

Which is 100 % why I love my games. Thank God its only a game so its completely normal, had it been a film it had been watered down to some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ PG-13 as usual.

Yeah right! WB wanted to remove them, the same publisher behind MORTAL KOMBAT X! Typical Hollywood ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

The Batman games have a different target audience than MKX. They want to be able to sell the games to teenagers and kids, but it's good that Rocksteady is choosing to keep what they have. Apparently none of the previous games were made with a rating in mind.

When it comes to games: that T(een) rating have the same stigma as PG-13 films, many just boycott them because they were not R-rated and hardcore. So called teenage idiot films. When it comes to games its a full 180, M / PEGI 18 games make much more money than T rated ones. Sorry but I found it hard to believe that WB would be so stupid to not even realize that fact. For an example Sony refuses to carry E rated games because it would associate them with the likes of Nintendo. Also new games are so much easier to get than new films (Even if that market is quickly changing). Having seen Rocksteadys first M rated 2006 game Urban Chaos: Riot Response, we will be in for some serious awesome massmurder in this one thankfully.

This is very generalized and it's difficult to prove that the rating actually has anything to do with the higher sales.

You sure about that? Just about every sports and driving game on the PS4 is rated E.

Not entirely sure if this is true or relevant.

Rocksteady was a very different company in the days of Urban Chaos, and, again, completely different target audience.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone wouldn't buy a game or watch a movie just because of the ESRB/PEGI/MPAA rating (especially considering how the MPAA works).

Have you actually read the ESRB report? It isn't "heavy" on profanity, the profanity doesn't look any worse than you would see in a movie on the more innappropriate side of PG-13, There are only a few spots with lots of blood, there is no gore, there definitely isn't sadism, and that so called "Extreme Violence" is really just some people getting shot, Batman punching people, and one short torture scene, where you don't see gore or anything really that terrible. According to Rocksteady, the game just has some very dark, sad moments that could affect some people more than others. If you want a game like what you're describing, stay away from Batman and go play Hatred or GTA or something. Honestly, where do you get your information?

US only rates AO on games where you see titis and a little more skin but with slaughter and lots of blood'n guts you get it rated for 16+

in EU we have the oposite titis are only rated for 16+

Arkham Knight wasn't a game which was made with a certain age rating in mind, they just told the story the way they wanted to

No, you can see nudity in M games. Look at GTA V and many other games, that had nudity but were still M. And M in US is 17+, not 16+
