When you beat Scarecrow, it records how many uncompleted side missions you have left and requires that you beat half of them before you're given the option to start Knightfall. So it can be anywhere from 0 to 7 side missions that you need to finish. Since you say you did 0 side missions, you'll have to complete any seven of them before Knightfall is available for the partial ending. If you want the full ending, you need to do all 14 side missions.
Whoever told you it's "just capturing rogues specifically" has no clue what they're talking about. It doesn't matter which ones you do because they're interchangeable. But if you don't need to do them all, you probably want to pick the shorter ones if you're on a time limit. So stuff like Man-Bat, Firefly, Azrael, Hush, Blackfire, and APCs are the short ones. Riddler is very much the longest one, but other long ones are the Bombs, Watchtowers, and Roadblocks.
Let me know if you don't want to look under the spoiler tag and want the mission names typed out.
As for how long it takes, I'm guessing somewhere between three and five hours to do those seven short ones. It depends a lot on on whether you have to hunt for stuff yourself or you know where to look.
And I'll just go ahead and give you the mission names for what I gave as the eight shortest in the order I listed them:
Creature of the Night
Gotham on Fire
Heir to the Cowl
Friend in Need
Lamb to the Slaughter
Armored and Dangerous
and
The Perfect Crime
Two-Faced Bandit
