The Albert King fight is scripted to be completed like so: Build up combos on everyone except King until ready for a Switch Takedown, and repeat this routine 2 or 3 times without losing your combos until ready for a Dual Beatdown. Dual Beatdowns are what really weaken him.
When the Dual Beatdown initiates you need to counter his jabs, then resume punching King until the next counter opportunity. Build up more combos and Switch Takedowns until the second Dual Beatdown, paying attention to his upcoming counter icons. After King is down and out, mop up the remaining thugs using your gadgets and special combo moves.
Don't take out too many thugs prematurely; keep them around to build up combos, and allow King time to revive his crew by focusing on unvanquished thugs using redirects or crowd control gadgets (REC, Freeze Grenades, Explosive Gel, Snap-Flash, Shield Bash, Zip Kick) so you can build up more combo points after he revives your "ammunition."
Don't strike King when he exhibits red counter icons, because you will not be able to counter him. Use redirects over King to avoid him when he's angry (red icons) and continue building combos until ready for a Switch Takedown or a Dual Beatdown. Don't allow King to break your combos.
Defeating Albert King is all a matter of rhythm and timing. The Killer Croc boss fight requires the same scripted timing. With practice you should be able to defeat both King and Croc in their respective battles in one single unbroken 100+ XP combo using a majority of both Batman's and either Robin's or Nightwing's available combo and gadget moves.
