Xbox One Controller not working? -FIXED-
Hi all,

ive recently gotten a completely new PC and ive been having issues with the batman arkham series. None of the batman games work with my controller... infact the arkham knight game thinks that i have a playstation 4 controller connected, ive contacted WB support but they are useless. All my other games on this PC work just fine with the controller its just the batman games that dont work. Bare in mind all my games are installed on an external hard drive. its just to save me time from installing all my games again when i change PCs. It used to work on my previous PC i was able to play all batman games with my xone controller but for some reason, on this PC batman arkham series does not allow me to play with controller...

and i know there have been previous discussions about this, but some of them are irrelevant and the others ive already tried.

Any help?

Thanks.

UPDATE:

after looking at my device manger this is what fixed it for me so if you are struggling too, here it is.

1) Open device manger
2) look for Human Interface Devices
3) Look for HID-Compliant Game controller
4) right click it, and disable it.
5) FIXED.

Turns out when this driver was enabled, the batman games would prioritise this driver over the xbox one wireless driver, thus making it not work, but upon disabling it, it will prioritise the xbox one wireless driver and work!!

hope i helped!

PS. Steam gifts are welcome :) <3

UPDATE 2.0:

it appears this fix that worked for me no longer seems to work for anyone else and causes BSOD. People have commented methods that worked for them so just read through the replies below. Again, the method i mentioned above is what worked for me at the time. It has NEVER caused me BSOD. maybe windows updates changed it and it now causes BSOD but either way use my method at your own risk. Read peoples replies about how they fixed it and maybe it can work for you too.

Okay, I know this post is old, but I've done a couple of things...

First, I tried the fix from OP and got BSOD any time the controller attached after that. I ran into the same problem that others had where they thought they would have to hit a retore point or reinstall their driver.

I found a work around!

Go into Device Manager and under View select "Show Hidden Devices."

This should show the HID-Compliant Game Controller in the list now.

Right click and select properties.

Click on the Driver Tab.

You should see the option for "Enable Driver."

It MIGHT be grayed out, but don't worry.

Power on your controller. Once it connects you have a few seconds before the BSOD occurs. In those few seconds, you 'll see the Grayed out Enable Button become live. Click it.

All should be as it was without having to do a restore point restore or backup restore.

I´m glad you wrote this because I had the same problem after following the instructions given. But I did not see your post and was looking for a solution other than re-installing windows for the pas 2 hours.

So be careful everyone, this s*ht can cause a lot of trouble

This definitely causes the blue screen of death but I was able to fix that in about 2 minutes, I explain below.

I am using an Xbox Elite 2 controller via Bluetooth connection on Windows 11 Pro. Custom PC with MSI Z690 edge, Intel i9-12900K, 64GB ddr4 and RTX 3070 Ti.

I can play Arkham City via Steam without issues and it sees an Xbox controller, As soon as I started Arkham Knight I was unable to control the game, all of the buttons were mapped wrong and Batman would not stop staring at the sky and trying to throw batarangs.

I found this forum and without reading through to some of the issues encountered I disabled "HID-Compliant Game Controller" in Device Settings. Windows promptly crashed to blue screen. I tried restarting a couple of times and it kept crashing. It suggested I restore, no thanks.

***How to Fix***

Being a controller driver the malfunctions are likely only to occur with a controller still connected. I noticed my controller was still on so I turned it off, disconnected the charging case that was attached via USB, turned off the PC and turned it back on and it booted to Windows fine. I then removed the controller in Bluetooth settings and re-added it. No need to go back to Device Manager, the driver will automatically install/enable when you pair your controller again and everything will be back to normal. Definitely no need to do a system restore here or spend hours in agony.

I will probably just play Arkham Knight with a PS5 DualSense controller, been wanting to see how some games play with it anyway. That said it is weird this is even an issue.

***Finally got my Xbox Elite 2 working for this game!***

I messed with this some more this morning. I had Xbox controller support enabled in Steam and Xbox One controller enabled as the preferred input for Arkham Knight. Game was still showing a PS4 controller and was not playable. Frustratingly, I connected a DualSense controller and enabled PS controller support and PS5 input and Arkham Knight detected it as an Xbox controller.

I disconnected the DualSense and turned back on my Elite, changed the controller type for this specific game to Xbox 360 controller instead of Xbox One controller and everything is finally working, mappings are correct and settings show an Xbox controller, albeit a 360 version but who cares, rumble and all work. I am not going to push it and try to get the paddles on my Elite 2 working...

Such a simple fix, disabling (not uninstalling) the apparently 5 "HID-compliant game controller" drivers worked immediately.
Was ready to throw in the towel after changing every setting under the sun, so thanks.

Absolutely saved my life. Thought I destroyed my baby. Still no luck on a fix for the game problem however. *sigh*
