This guide shows you the idea.
With all Batman Arkham games you start with the basic gadgets, skills and perks etc and as you progress you get more stuff. You do build your Batman character yes, but Its definately not an RPG, its not like you can specialise in one area and not bother in others. By the end of the game you'll have all the gadgets, all the skills, all the powers, just like Asylum.
I'd recommend Skyrim for an RPG, or Fallout---Batman is more combat, open world, adventure, puzzles, action.
You can only smash mouse 1 for so long.
