Kind of......

The game expects to you at least play City, which expects you to play Asylum. (Origins is skippable and not even made by the same devs)

Absolutely, they are fantastic and is nice knowing the continuity of events and of the characters. But if you really can't, there's some good recap videos on Youtube.

You should. The order is :Asylum --> City--> Knight. The stories are connected. Arkham Origin can be considered a stand alone game, it's very good, it's about the beginning of Batman, some people don't like it because it's just more of Arkham City, nothing new in terms of gameplay. Wait for sale and grab all of them.

The Arkhamverse is pretty large in terms of its canon, one of the things that, IMO, adds quite a bit of value to it. As far as Arkham Knight, you can understand what happens if you at least play Arkham City, but I'd strongly recommend the entire series, from the Arkham games to the comics.

To really understand what is happening to Batman through the fear toxin, I would say it would be a good idea to play at least City and Asylum. Though I won't say it's totally crucial.

This will probably help the most - check out this timeline link and it has the chronology with the comics and where they go along with their names -
