Is it possible to free-roam as side characters?

I like to play as Cat-woman since she's my favorite hero but a few years ago when I played the game on PS4 they made it so you can ONLY free-roam as Batman. Did they ever change that?

Well I just did batgirls and she can certainly free roam the story area for collectibles, but I am not sure what the collictibles get you beyond achievments.

you pick what Catwoman/Robin/Nightwing/Harley/Batman, etc in the showcase and then that one will show up in freeroam
ex: if you have the Classic TV DLC...you can choose which of the 3 Catwomen to play.

Will be nice if in a next Batman's game we control other characters of the BatFamily in the free-roam.

This game just shows the problem of not focusing on quality.. make it for everything and it's optimized for nothing
