Why is Azrael black?

He was always white in the comics. Why did they change this? To be more politically correct? What black person was ever raised Catholic? It totally ruins the immersion. You shouldn't change things like this. I loved this character before they PC'd him. Next up we'll see black Catwoman, Asian Mr. Freeze and a woman Riddler. If they were black in the comics, fine by me. But when they obviously weren't then DON'T CHANGE THEM.

If this ruins your immersion, then you have bigger issues to worry about dude. Seriously it's a game, based on a comic book, about a guy who beats people up even though it changes nothing and he has more than enough money to economically repair every problem his city is suffering from. And characters/stories get retconned in batman all the time. Seriously, don't be such a little ♥♥♥♥♥, let go and enjoy yourself. It's a great game.

Good, then it's fine with you; Michael Lane was black in the comics. You're probably getting him confused with Jean-Paul Valley, the other Azrael, who does not appear in the Arkham series (unless you imagine he's the one wearing the PS3-exclusive suit in Arkham Origins).

You do realize there's been more than one Azrael, right? If you look at the current Azrael's profile -- assuming you've completed that side mission -- you'd realize that it's not the deceased Jean-Paul Valley from the original Knightfall story arc. It's a brand new ongoing character canonized in the comics themselves. Like the Arkhamverse Robin character, they used the then-current version of the character Timothy Drake, not Richard Grayson nor Jason Todd nor Stephanie Brown nor the then-upcoming Damiam Wayne.

Do a little more research before making these kinds of topics. This has nothing to do with political correctness or with all-things-to-all-people-simultaneously market casting (CW network). It has more to do with using the current existing version of a character as canonized from the source material, occasionally and successfully way more interesting than the original version such as Green Lantern John Stewart vs original Silver Age version Hal Jordan.

Well, no I did not realize that. I did so some research but I guess it wasn't sufficient enough. Thanks for that, but I still don't like it.

There are two Azraels. He was not "always black." You're thinking of Jean Paul Valley. This one is Michael Lane, who first appeared in 2008.

And really, screw Jean. He was lame.

Reading this post raised some red flags about how you see the world. To address the question "What black person was ever raised Catholic?" I happen to be a black person that was raised Catholic. I am Nigerian-American. I literally went through Sunday school, went to Confession, took the body and blood of Christ every Sunday. I even went through Confirmation. To those who don't know what Confirmation is, its basically a graduation ceremony for becoming a devoted Catholic. So reading your post made me sick. Just be more diligent about you research cause you look extremely sus and uneducated.

Azrael, Jean-Paul Valley, first appeared in Batman: Sword of Azrael, released in 1992. In the year 1995 he was given his own solo series written by his creator Denny O'Neil. However like with most comics series, sales began to decline and Denny was informed that his Azrael series would be canceled in the year 2003.

To keep Jean-Paul from being tampered with or ruined by other writers, Denny decided to kill his character in the final issue. Jean-Paul Valley was shot multiple times and fell off a skyscraper into a frozen stream.

Years later, DC had the desire to have Azrael back in Gotham but with Jean-Paul dead they had to make a new Azrael, Michael Lane.

This post is more ignorant than anything. Don't get me wrong, I HATE adding forced minority stuff into gaming for the sake of being "all-inclusive" and "PC" as opposed to letting it happen naturally, but AK didn't suffer from this. Jean-Paul Valley is the white Azrael, but guess what? It's Michael Lane in AK. I couldn't find many pictures of his Azrael showing his face, but the one I did find he was black.

Edit: How does this ruin the immersion exactly? It's a side quest, and you can hardly see any of his skin. There was very little to immerse yourself in. This isn't too say it's a bad story in the side quest, but damn you are making a mountain out of a nonexistent molehill you didn't even research.

As others have said, this is Michael Lane, the second Azrael, who was/is black and debuted in 2007. The first one was white, named Jean-Paul Valley who debuted in 1992.

You claim you did research, but I'm not convinced. This info is literally one wikipedia page away for non-comic readers.
