YMMV on what "occasional" means.
For me? That translates to "Pretty much every time you try to launch the bloody thing!"
I always play AK off-line...there's no need to be on-line for AK....but if I try to start it after not playing for a few weeks it will not start off-line without going thru the verification again.
I think it varries a LOT between people.
I mean, almost every time I try to play (this and every opther Denuvo game, that secondary token from the Denuvo server seems to be the issue) I get a "first run" dialog, other people say they never run into that issue and play offline all the time.
i just launched 11 games with Denuvo in them while I was offline, decided to test every one I had installed when Dragon Age: inquisition failed to launch, only two (which were, oddly enough, the two I had the most problems with early on and have played least in recent months) actually played.
1) First time run
2) Game's exe is altered by a patch
3) User's system environment changes significantly*
*the definition of this seems to vary. Usually its after a hardware change or after a windows system update (creator's, fall creator's etc). However some people claim that they have had to reactivate after monthly security updates. This has not been the case for me *yet*
But the game does not and has never had an "always online requirement". No denuvo title does to date.
Yeah, I've run between twice in one day and three months between demanding reauthentication, usually it happens about monthly for half of the games and no more than three months for almost all of them. The twice in one day was early in a release, and probably a bug from poorly implementing Denuvo, but it keeps me warry about just how bad it can potentially be.
There have been zero hardware changes to the PC, by the way, in well over a year and even that was just swapping out an SSD for the 7200 mechanical that was in there before and every game was reauthenticated immediately after that was done. Though, it being so long ago, there was only Mad Mad, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Rise of the Tomb Raider on there that used it then.
Denuvo is basically a template that the publishers can adjust to their liking. Its them that decide when reauthentication is needed and how long a game can be played offline before the token expires.
