Is the game crashing after the Obsidian logo vanishes?
Yeah it crashed at that point
The problem is, Windows 7 and 8 can't handle this game in fullscreen mode, for some weird reason.
So you'll need to force the game to run in windowed mode.
To do that:
Go into the Kotor 2 folder at (C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Knights of the Old Republic II), and open swkotor2.ini. (If it asks, you have to open it with Notepad)
Once you've opened swkotor2.ini, you need to make the following changes:
- Under [Graphics Options], add the following: AllowWindowedMode=1
- Under both [Graphics Options] and [Display Options] you'll see Fullscreen=1. Change both of those "1" to "0".
That should just about do it. Only thing is, you'll have to start the game with it's swkotor2.exe icon, instead of the Steam Library or the "rungameID" icon on your desktop.
(For some strange reason, both of them undo everything you changed)
You'll know it worked, if you start the game and a window opens. If the screen goes black, then something went wrong, and it's still running at fullscreen.
Dude. Thank you so much. I know you replied a month or so ago, but I just gave up with trying to fix this game months ago, then i decided to give it a try again, and you made my day. :D
Glad I could help. (It sure is a good feeling when that game finally starts up, after all the headache you went through, isn't it? :)
At first, when I bought the game, it crashed for me too. When I went to the internet to find out why, most sites (especially Microsoft) basically said "You're up a creek w/o a paddle. Go buy a different game (preferably a brand-new, Microsoft-made game). Kotor 2 won't work on 8."
It took some time, but I had found a few sites that told how to get Kotor 2 to work on Windows 7 & 8 (I think Steam forums may also have told it), with the method I posted here.
So I try to share the knowledge to as many as I can. And prove that, yes, Kotor 2 works on Windows 8.
I've had it do that to me once, but I can't for the life of me remember what I did do fix that. The closest I can remember was setting Compatibility Mode to run it in Windows XP (Service Pack 2. I suppose SP3 would work, too).
You might double-check what the Height and Width are set to in the swkotor2.ini file. Kotor 2 can only be run up to a certain resolution before it becomes unstable (1024x768 is about the highest you can safely go. Mine's currently set to 800x600).
Bear in mind that like Fullscreen, the entries are under both [Display Options] and [Graphics Options], and both sets have to be set the same.
(And watch what you're changing, one is Height, then Width. The other set is the other way around.)
Also, while you're in the swkotor2.ini, make sure that under [Graphics Options] that Frame Buffer is set to Frame Buffer=0. The Frame Effects Buffer can cause the game to destabilize (if your system can take it, good. If not, then turn it off. Better to lose motion blur and invisibility while cloaked, than to lose the game.)
Other than that, I'm not sure. It wasn't a very complicated thing to fix the "crash at start-up" issue, I remember that.
I had the same problem with my ATI card when I had Frame Buffer Effects and Soft Shadows on. After disabling them the game ran fine. This still bothered me and I found a solution to that as well: Reverting from AMD's 14.9 drivers back to previous 14.4 drivers.
So I would suggest, first revert the drivers, if that doesn't work try to disable FBE and/or Soft Shadows. If you have a Geforce card then all I can do is link this site which has a lot of solutions:
