WHY WON'T IT WORK!?
I acquired this through the latest Humble Bundle. Downloaded TSLRCM and M4-78 (or whatever the planet is).
All set to play.
Click 'Play.'

My screen gets brighter...
and nothing.

I'm running a Windows 7, 64-bit.

I've tried the windowed mode fix, but haven't got a clue what else to do.
What do I need to do to play this game??

compatibility mode with vista or xp possibly?

That get's me to the 'preparing to Launch,' window, but that's it.
Then it tells me that game is already running, and I get to be sad, again.

I get into the game, but when I create a new character it hangs on a black screen, have to ctrl alt delete to escape. Really anoying because it works on my laptop, but i want to play it on my desktop :(

For that, try turning off the Frame Buffer Effects.

Actually... try doing that too, Theotician. It might help to stablize the game.
If not, then tell me what resolution are you playing it at?

Hmm, I read that M4-78 can cause issues with Steam so I didn't even download it, just the main mod.

That's true. Some mods are incompatible with each other.

It might be best to remove those mods, then just try to get the vanilla game to work first (although, you might try to get the TSLRCM mod to work after that, as it's very stable and helps fix a lot of the bugs and thus improve compatibility.)

To OP:
What i've done:
1. DL KOTOR 2 steam
2. DL KOTOR 2 pirated(you also need a patch IIRC)
3. Mod pirated KOTOR 2 with restoration mod & m4
4. run pirated with cracked exe
5. if its works copy&paste the whole folder from pirated KOTOR2 to steam KOTOR2 except the exes
6. play with your legit kotor2 on steam with mods

Win8 x64
Works fine so far.

That indeed worked with swKotOR, went to Steam/steamapps/common/swkotor into the swkotor.ini file, searched for Frame buffer, set it to 0, done, fixed.

Gonna do the same for the kotor2, which btw is to be found at the same location Steam/steamapps/common/ but instead of swkotor it's named Knights of the Old Republic II.
Just so you know. Ini file is named swkotor2.ini

Cheers

Let me ammend my initial post.
I've never even gotten the launcher.

I double-click the .exe, with administrative privileges, in compatability mode, windowed, no full screen, Frame Buffer zeroed, TSLRCM isn't installed, I deleted and reinstalled the game.
I've changed the game's resolution and then my computer screen's resolution (game defaults to 640X480, my computer defaults to 1600X900) to make them match.

SOMETHING happens, but nothing changes. Maybe it quits in less time than I can comprehend any change, but it seems to start then stop just as quickly.

Interestingly enough, KOTOR II brightens the screen and fails to launch, while KOTOR I darkens the screen and fails to launch.

Are you on laptop by any chance?

My laptop with Intel HD3000 runs KOTOR1 with cutscenes disabled.
KOTOR2 doesnt run at all.

Meanwhile my desktop PC runs both without any problem with mods.
Both are on Win8 x64.

said this in other thread but figured its worth repeating adding Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 to the bottom of graphic options in the .ini file worked for me. after all else failed.

Folks! A direct fix for this. It's not ideal (you have to run it in windowed mode). But it bloody works.
Edit the .ini file to run the game in Windowed Mode. Add "AllowWindowedMode=1 under [Graphics Options] in swkotor2.ini and make sure "FullScreen=0". Refer to "pcgaming.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II_-_The_SIth_Lords#Disable_Steam_Overlay" for a detailed list of fixes.
