Everything that isn't movies 1-6 and the animated series The Clone Wars is currently non-canon. When Star Wars: Rebels is released along with the new movies, they will continue the canon.

Which is pretty much how it's always been.

That's why it's called The Expanded Universe, to tell it apart from the canon story (i.e. the movies, and shows made by George Lucas).

I know, there used to be a whole classification system for what level of canon each form of media was, and then Disney took over and deleted my favorite characters. ;(

just as a side note...do you veterans SW players and fans think that playing all the games collection following the release date order is also a viable way to enjoy this universe? again, i haven't watched the films so i don't know nearly anything about plot and lore...i'm just thinking of playing this collection trying to enjoy the plot or at least trying to figuring out the events throughout all the games...if it's possible of course

Definitely watch Star Wars IV, V and VI before playing the games so that the universe isn't completely new. As for order there's no specific reason to play them in any order unless they're part of the same series (KotOR, Dark Forces/Jedi Knight, etc).

True, unless you're just doing it for fun.
Reading the books helps quite a bit as well. Some game events were first introduced in them.

Such as Exar Kun (who was a part of Kotor 1 & 2's backstory); he appeared in the Jedi Academy Trilogy books (which takes places 7 years after Return of the Jedi)

Or, on that note, the game Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast happens years after the above books. One level in the game has you at Luke Skywalker's Jedi Academy to talk with the Grandmaster himself (and features views of his students training)

Or in the game Empire at War: Gold Pack, a number of worlds are shown from the EU, such as Dathomir - a planet dominated by Force-senstive women called "witches", and their Dark Side counterparts, the Nightsisters.
All of which would probably mean more to you, if you read the book The Courtship of Princess Leia

I know this is a really old post but I still would love to answer this question in case anyone stumbles across it or is still curious. also, if you respond please leave spoilers out of it, as the star wars universe has some of the most amazing story telling of any game or movie series.

If you are interested in diving deep into star wars lore and having a great time doing it, this is the order:
Episode 4,5,6,1,2,3, Then play Knights of the Old Republic 1 then 2, Then the Revan Book, then the mmo Star Wars The Old Republic, followed by the rest of the old republic books (decieved, fatal alliance, and annihilation) then lastly, the 3 books in the darth bane series.

It crosses a lot of different platforms but going through all of those will show how the events of every single part of each game book and movie are related. The darth bane series really ties everything together but only if you go through the rest of it first. It is essentially a bridge between the old republic era and the movies. Also, as far as I know, they have not removed the old republic or things before the movies from cannon.

I HIGHLY reccomend every single piece of the above mentioned story, in that order. I was honesttly blown away with how the story unfolds and how much influence the events of Kotor, or any other part of the old republic still has ripples into the current generation of star wars.

to anyone that has already gone through the above, i would love to hear if you loved it as much as I did.
Enjoy and may the force be with you.
