It's probably alright to play it on its own, though I'ld advise against it.
For the ending, however, I strongly recommend you finish the first game, to fully appreciate the entire experience.
If you don't mind missing out on those things, check out a summary video on YouTube to fill you in.
Yes it does - And it wouldn't need to, since the games aren't tied all that directly in the first place. It's more of a standalone campaign than a sequel.
As another stated, if you play Kotor II before I, some of that game will be "ruined" for you (don't want to spoil anything).
