KOTOR2: Fix for "stuck after combat" bug
KOTOR 2 : FIX FOR STUCK AFTER COMBAT WHERE PLAYER CANNOT MOVE AFTER FIGHT

Hey guys, welcome to KOTOR 2 / STAR WARS™ Knights of the Old Republic™ II: The Sith Lords™ (+ Restored Content mode).
Many people are experiencing a bug, where the main character is unable to move after a combat/fight.
Unfortunately, many people included me.
You will inevitably encounter this bug for the first time if you fight against the mine droids in the first lvl on PERAGUS, altough the version we are using is the fully patched (+ „fixed“) version on Steam.

In this particular representation, this bug is exclusevly in KOTOR 2.
STAR WARS™ KOTOR 1 may also experienced some freeze glitches, but they were triggered by total different malfunctioning softwarecode and not after every combat you encounter.

WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM?
The „stuck after combat“ bug is caused, because the game engine starts malfunctioning if it has to deal with the combination of high fps output from the gpu and high refresh rate of the monitor panel.
KOTOR 2 was released in 2004 where 60Hz and around 80fps have been default and the game engine refuses to deal with hardware of the current generation. Higher refreshrates are slowly becoming affordable and the created fps in a game like KOTOR 2 will be massive in 2021.

There are already some guides online that have helped some people with this bug, but certainly I was one of the few people where it did not work out with my hardware configuration. I use a PG279Q with G-Sync and 144 Hz, an i7-5820K and a GTX 1080.

I firmly believe that those people, who still haven’t been able to fix the „stuck after combat“ bug are most likely to use a similar monitor and hardware configration (or better).

SOUTION FOR THE PROBLEM
First things first, those are the steps you need to follow, that will help you if you have a 60Hz monitor:
  • Start KOTOR 2 from SteamLibrary -> Options -> Graphics -> Resolution -> set Resolution to your native monitor resolution but with 60 Hz
  • Then again -> Options -> Graphics -> More Options -> enable V-Sync
  • Restart the game

When V-Sync is enabled, your graphics card will stop pushing out as many frames as it can and starts to sync the frames with the native Hertz (Hz) of your monitor panel. Therefore, if you have a 60Hz panel you will now be able to play KOTOR 2 again without this bug.
Unfortunately I was one of the few people that still didn’t found success with this solution. So if you are still experiencing this bug too, lets go on:
  • Rightclick your NVIDIA settings in your taskbar -> NVIDIA Control Panel -> Display -> Refresh Rate -> 60 Hz -> Confirm
  • After that, again in your NVIDIA Control Panel -> Configure G-SYNC -> Disable G-Sync completely -> Confirm

Keep in mind to enable G-SYNC again when you are finished with your KOTOR 2 session. 😊

Hope this works for you you guys, have a great day.:steamhappy:

I also have found that, if the character gets stuck, it can still move forward by simultaneously pressing both the left and right mouse buttons. After that, the character will not be stuck anymore, and you can go back to using the movement controls (such as WASD).

Sorry to necro this topic but I just got the game on Steam (no thanks to Aspyr for going back on their promise to deliver restored content to the Switch). I almost immediately encountered this bug and found a few fixes on my own.

1) At least once just going into and out of the menu let me resume moving.
2) Saving and then loading the game lets you continue from that spot and moment in a heartbeat. The downside is any enemy bodies will disappear so you might lose loot.
3) Doublecheck the resolution you set the game to. I initially set mine to 1080p 60fps and was getting the bug. After a little digging I remembered my laptop monitor is 120htz. I went in and changed the setting in the game to 1080p 120 and so far it seems to have fixed the issue. I've only played a few minutes since to check though. I'll return if the bug pops back up.

Ok... Still having the problem. Saving and loading still works to get around the bug, but it's annoying having to save and reload the game every couple of combat encounters. Saving and reloading is really fast but having to do it so often gets annoying fast. On the plus side, while bodies do disappear, the remains with loot don't so you don't lose out on loot with this trick after all.

Found another fix. If you are in a party, just switch to another party member. Move far enough and you can switch back. Or if they are still stuck, keep using that party member to move until they get stuck and then the original person should be unstuck. That's how it seems to be working for me. It's an improvement over doing the save/load thing repeatedly.

I cant change my hz because i have a acer nitro 5 and it wont let me i have tried turning auto save off and v-sync off as well as iv seen others say to do and it still will happens the save and load are the only one so far that works but i really do not want to keep doing that

just limit the FPS for the game in nVidia control panel to 60 FPS. works for me.

My game has progressively become unplayable. I don’t want to stop playing it but my character freezes after every single battle.

It wasn’t even an issue when I first started but it’s got worse as I get further into the game. Is there a reason for that?

I’ve tired everything discussed here but nothing worked. If anyone has any other tips or tricks, I will gladly listen. Thanks.

Limit framerate to 60 or 75fps. Or set your display to either 60 or 75 Hz. Or limit both.

If that doesn't fix it, check the settings and make sure those limits are being applied.

For me, I did have to set the max frame rate for the game at 60hz from my Nvidia control panel. After that, it was fixed without needing to do anything to the G-SYNC.

I can't limit it to 60 because my laptop has only 144hz, what should i do?:steammocking:

I tried changing the refresh rate of my laptop monitor, changed the screen res and even tinkered with my nvidia settings, no luck yet.

Just tried turning AA off as well as another setting off, still nothing, I quit.

This worked for me aswell and I can play on my native resolution too

Just LOCK FPS on 60.
V-Sync will not work if you have hight GHz monitor. (144 GHz - V-Sync ON = 144 FPS)
All OLD game work normal only on 60 FPS.

Ahh, fixed, thanks a bunch!
