Are you 'a jedi' again
So I'm nearing the end of KOTOR one at the moment. Now, i wanted to play a scoundrel using blasters e.t.c however, when you hit the academy, it feels like "you must use melee weapons and lightsabers for your char to be useful" is KOTOR 2 the same?

Yeahh... the 'Scoundrel', 'Soldier' etc isn't a character option in KOTOR II. Your starting classes are all tied in to the Jedi Order, (don't wanna spoil anything, but yes, you're sort-of a Jedi) so while you don't HAVE to use lightsabers and melee to be useful, the game is a wee bit biased towards that option :)

Like Wren said, but unlike KOTOR 1, you start with force powers in KOTOR 2. However, it still takes a while for you to get your lightsaber and you have plenty of enemies that attack you with blasters, so it is good to use them.

A bonus for KOTOR 2 is that you can have two sets of weapons that you can swap out when you want. So if you wanted to, you could have a set of maxed out blasters for one set, and then if enemies close in on you, you could switch to melee weapons instead.

Blasters are much more powerful in KotOR 2 and can be a viable choice, they do less damage than a lightsaber but are comparable to melee weapons when poperly upgraded.

that's pretty cool. Will have to keep all that in mind when i start playing it :p KOTOR 1 was fun but suffers from some bugs n just feels clunky with the interface e.t.c at times but i thurally enjoyed it. If KOTOR 2 is pretty much cleaning that stuff up n all that im happy as :D

I'll just go ahead and say it because I don't want it to stop you from playing the game.

KOTOR 2 has its fair share of bugs as well (I will say the Steam version is more cleaned up than the original Xbox version). However, if you download TSLRCM it fixes a lot of these and some gaps in dialogue; there's also a mod called M4-78 that adds a little more to the game (it was supposed to be in the original verison, but got cut due to time constraints), but it's up to you if you want to download it.
TBH, yes, you can focus on blasters and ranged combat, and still be effective. One of your potential party members is even specifically focused towards ranged combat despite the potential for them to become a Force user. You just have to be clever about it is all.

You start as a jedi a lot of people disliked Taris and starting as a non jedi in the first game.

However a ranged jedi character is perfectly viable. Duel Wield 2 blaster pistols choose Jedi Sentinel-Jedi Watchman / Sentinel-Sith Assassin.

You will still have to use force powers/ wear a robe or remove the force restriction with wearing armor using a mod.

If you want a kotor esque experience and not be a jedi Try Swtor it has non jedi classes that focus on blasters and tech abilities but Swtor is an MMO it can get repetitive and it has a subscription price or you can deal with F2p restrictions which make the game unplayable.

Is the Old Republic really that bad? I was considering giving it a try, but I guess now I'm having second thoughts...

A lot of people, myself included, agree that the SWTOR story lines, namely the Jedi Guardian and the Sith Operative are fun to play. No reason to sub for that though the starter pack would be helpful for inventory etc. A sub is more necessary for crafting/market/ etc and late game stuff or working with a guild and organized PvP.

I had a paid sub and got my monies worth for about 4 mos. -- joined a guild and such after 2 max characters (maxed 2 more) but didn't like the end game at the time. Am going to return to it after i get my replacement gaming rig next week as it has been a couple years.

As for the OP there are some Ranged Jedi guides about, from reading them it seems doable I just don't play that class.

There are actually a lot of instances where I PREFER to have ranged options as opposed to just a lightsaber, seeing as how you can draw out opponents 1 by 1 if you're smart enough and pick at them from afar.

Well, no harm in trying TOR for yourself to see... it's free after all.

I've done a few playthroughs using blasters and I never saw any real difference from using melee weapons. Not only is it totally doable but it's actually pretty fun. You'll definitely want to pick up that perk that lowers enemies lightsaber deflection though.

Precise Shot, to be exact.

Yeah, I might try it just for the story I guess, even though it's set like 300 years after KotOR 2
