Although you can't see it anywhere in the game, influence is just like the light/dark side bar. It starts in the middle for every character you meet and it can go high or low, you just need to hit the bottom or the top.
Take a Dark Side playthrough for instance. I'll be a nice fella, helping people out with the occasional slip to the Dark Side, like helping the smuggling ring on Telos for example. I'll do Nar Shadaa right out of the gate and grab Mira. I get all my companions influence up high, complimenting them, listening to their advice and then I train them to be happy Jedi... then I fall utterly and completely to the Dark Side and drag them all kicking and screaming with me.
Palpatine didn't get to be Emperor by being full on evil. He manipulated, persuaded and made allowances when it served his ends or it didn't matter anyway. That's why they call it being "seduced" by the Dark Side. :D
For a Light Side playthrough... what's a murder here and there to make HK-47 happy? haha
