Kotor 2 install problems
I bought Kotor 1 & 2 recently when they were on sale on Steam. I installed K1, and a shortcut for it appeared in the "Steam" folder under "Games" in my Start Menu (I am running Win 7), as expected after installing any game. Later I installed K2, but there was no shortcut in my "Games/Steam" folder like with K1.

The only way I was able to figure out to play K2 was that I had been playing Torchlight 2 and Steam was still loaded and was in my tray. I clicked on it to exit it after I finished TL2, and I noticed that at the top of the menu it displayed was several games, incl. TL2, K1, and K2. So now when I wanna play K2, I have to load Steam, click on it in the tray, and select it from there. It works, but it doesn't strike me as the way it is *supposed* to work, esp. since I just happened to bump into it.

Anyone have any idea why Steam didn't create a shortcut for K2 like it did for K1 ? This is the first time I have had something like this happen in all my years of gaming, incl. several Steam games.....

You must have clicked the wrong thing, I guess.

Navigate to the game and find the exe file, create a shortcut, and add it to your desktop. I did that back when I couldn't stop playing this game for easy access and it worked for me.

Thanks for your reply.

I can't navigate to the game and there is no .exe file. My Kotor 1 shortcut just says "steam://rungameid/32370" instead of listing the name of an .exe file. My TL2 shortcut is the same way - "steam://rungameid/200710". It's the same format for all my Steam games.

Right click the game title in steam library, then click Properties, then click the Local Files tab, then choose to Browse local files and in the main Knights of the old Republuc 2 folder you will see the file named swkotor2.exe ................rightclick and HOLD down as you drag to your desktop relaese and choose the option to create shortcut here.

CrackeR, thanks so much, I found it !!! My Steam dir is under C:\Program Files (x86), and there is a "steamapps" dir under that. I had been searching for "steamapps" from C:\, and it came back not found. But if I search from the Program Files (x86) dir, it finds it instantly. I have no idea why - clearly my knowledge of Explorer file search is lacking.

Now for the bad/weird news: if I double-click on the "swkotor.exe" file, it runs Kotor 1 fine. If I do the same (whether directly or after making a shortcut) for Kotor 2, it fails, displaying a dialog box that says:

"This game needs Steam. Please make sure that the Steam client is running and logged on with a Steam account that has this game in Library, then run the game again. This game will now exit."

Yes, the client is running and I am logged on (not only did I double-check this, but it has to be true because Kotor 1 runs directly just fine).

EDIT: so even though I found the local files, I still do not have a usable shortcut for K2, and the only way I can play it is by selecting it from the System tray icon display. This is not the end of the world, of course, but why it is this way, and why the original K2 install did not create a shortcut that works (using the "rungameid" syntax) remains a frustrating mystery. I guess if I knew the gameid of K2 I could make a shortcut that works....

EDIT #2: un-installed, re-downloaded and re-installed. This time everything was normal, incl. shortcuts on desktop & Start Menu. Last time was just an anomaly apparently....sunspots, flashback from doing acid in the 60s, who knows....all is good now.
