Especially since I'm running short of other avoidable killings to do to raise his influence, having already completed Nar Shaddaa and Dantooine before going on to Onderon, and raised both Goto's and HK-47's influence high enough to discover their extra dialogue / content and bonuses, while still remaining strongly Light Side: there's only Korriban left after Onderon.
I guess you have to actually step over the line by removing the pro-Talia guards and doing *everything* to support Vaklu, otherwise Vaklu considers you an enemy on the grounds that you're not sufficiently fanatical as a friend?
(I mean, siding with the Republic was what I wanted to do anyway, but I find it interesting that I can start a riot on Vaklu's behalf, intervene in a street discussion on his behalf, and agree to get rid of Talia's generals while still being considered a royalist. I wonder if I also won the swoop race and shouted his name, like the other swoop champion wants me to, if that would make any difference...)
Doing that stuff gets you the quest to remove the captains. You still need to actually remove them to get offered to join. If you kill any of them, you are forced to join.
Geresi can be persuaded to hand in his notice and quit the job, and Riiken ends up being informed that he's about to be fired for speaking his mind too often, as an alternative to assassinating him... but there's no way to remove Bostuco without killing him.
This despite the fact that Bostuco is named as one of the people who might actually be sympathetic to Vaklu's point of view and regards him as his commanding officer, but is supporting the Queen anyway because she is technically Vaklu's own superior... however Bostuco is the one who greets you if you side with Talia, on the grounds that he can't follow a man who is making deals with the Sith.
If you get rid of the other two pro-Talia commanders via the non-violent methods, can you still side with Talia as long as neither Riiken nor Geresi actually died? Narratively, Riiken could have his court-martial cancelled by his superior officer Bostuco, and be recalled to the colours once he's proven right, that Vaklu really *has* allied with the Sith (and indeed, offscreen, he may be instrumental in persuading Bostuco) - he is later seen on Telos, having been promoted and put in charge of the Onderonian contribution there: and Geresi is never seen again anyway, even if you don't persuade him to quit.
If the player sides with Vaklu, in fact, it seems that Vaklu thinks your assistance will be strong enough for him to risk double-crossing the Sith, destroying their presence on Dxun and keeping them out of the palace assault altogether, then sending troops to Telos to fight against the Sith attack there...
