Do you follow the canon - female jedi exile and light side?
Just curious.

About to start a new playthrough and I'm unsure on how to play, to follow the canon or play my way.

No
It's a RPG; Canon-runs clearly defy the very basis of a RPG.

No. The fun of games like this is seeing what changes based on my choices, not conforming to some arbitrary view of what actually happened.

I mean I have played as a light side female, but I wouldn't say I was following canon. I've also played every other option available because it's that good of a game. Just do what you want to do. There's no right or wrong answer.

I've always played a male character in KOTOR 2, and a female character in KOTOR 1.

Sort of like a role-reversal between Revan (who was written in the legacy-canon as male) and Meetra (who was written in the legacy-canon as female). It's always quite interesting :P

Because I'm likely to only play a game once, and since I prefer a thorough 'cinematic' story-telling playthrough. When I read that 'cannon' was a LS female, I figured that's what I'd play. However, after researching a few things ...

1) The companion for male exiles had a more interesting story arc and was a more useful combatant, than the female only one.

2) There's an ability available for the male exile that's unavailable for the female exile.

3) Making the exile female was decided well after the game was released. (Not by Obsidian - who made the game)

... I changed my mind to LS male. But that's just me.

Males are significantly more powerful as well because of battle precognition, so for a hard playthrough I would reccommend a male character. Plus Disciple is a bit of a douche.

BTW, what is the Canon for the background about Revan? Revan is a light-sided male, correct?

Hell yes! RPGs aren't necessarily about making a choice, RPGs can just be about playing a role, enjoying a story.

I'm playing light side female, cyan lightsaber, with the workshop mod to use her canon appearance. Don't regret it one bit!

I played female lightside in both KOTOR and KOTOR 2 for reasons that have nothing to do with "canon."

I use female characters because, for some reason, I find it more interesting to play with female protagonists. Having said that, I will probably be using a male Exile in my next KOTOR 2 playthrough because I'm curious about the handmaiden. Also, I find Deciple to be somewhat useless beyond moving the plot along.

I play light side characters because I seem to have empathy for video game characters who don't actually exist and cannot bring myself to do many of the things that would get me dark points. Seriously. That's the actual reason. I have never been able to play a mainly renegade Shepard in Mass Effect, either. (This was especially true in KOTOR, where the options are often things like, "Thank you for your time," vs. "I'm bored. I'm going to kill you now," with NOTHING in between.)

I'd also like to point out that one of the things that's so great about KOTOR 2 is the fact that it throws out the stark black and white view of "Noble Jedi and Evil Sith." You don't necessarily have to be entirely "light" or "dark." KOTOR 2 is all about the grey!
