If you get points of the opposite alignment to what you currently are the penalty is severe. It would be the same if you were light side and got some dark side points.
One kind of minor thing with this is if you get light mastery as a sith lord I don't think you get the stat bonus.
Well as a sith lord I still get more dark side points than light side. Overall it seems to me that its just way easier to get dark side points than light side.
As for the last part of what you said: not sure, never gone the opposite of my prestige I don't think.
edit: just maxed out lightside as a sith marauder, getting the bonus of +3 str.
Nice that opens up some more interesting stories without worrying about a penalty. Turning from one side to the other.
I think even on harderst difficulty level this game is too easy to worry about little stat bonus from max lightside points and in case of marauder I think it's better to have +1d8 damage from dark side than +3 strength (which is +1 to hit +1 to dmg or +2 +2 if you get even value in stregth).
Yeah, well I was doing it for story purposes. As your post suggested, the duality of almost every event your choice can present makes roleplaying value very high.
