When Revan found it, he changed after going down to it's surface and discovering the Trayus Academy and knowledge of the True Sith. That it was full of life and not barren means nothing. So was the cave on Dagobah. Great evil went on there in the past because it was a Sith world. Revan just amplified what was already there when he set off the MSG.
The way you put Revan's discovery of Malachor is probably the best counterpoint to my theory, I will admit that. Revan would have likely gone there prior to the battle, and what he found would only reinforce his decision. I do have some disagreements with your other claims though. Dagobah was not a world tainted by the dark side; the cave was the only known place that housed such corruption. Would you say that the Amazon rain-forest is a dark nexus because people were killed there?
As for the history of Malachor V, you are likely correct in the assumption that great evil occurred there, given the presence of the Trayus Academy. How much that history influenced the aura of the planet when Revan reached it is unknown, as descriptions of the planet at that time were vague, though the MSG definitely reignited the spirit of Malachor.
I said nothing of the planet itself. I said the cave on Dagobah (which was a DS nexus) was not devoid of life or barren, so we know that habitability doesn't play into whether a place is corrupted or not in Star Wars.
Revan did go down to the surface prior to the battle to learn why the Mandalorians considered it verbotten. It was in the ruins of the Trayus Academy that he learned of Korriban and the True Sith Empire in the Unknown Regions.
"It has been here for thousands of years. It is a place where Sith teachings run strong… It is the threshold of the borders of an ancient empire. Kreia says that it was a place of reflection for the ancient Sith… a gateway to their lands. It drew Lord Revan… and it calls to her as well. She said that the teachings here will lead one to the Sith… the true Sith… and all their shadowed worlds. This place led Revan to the graveyards of Korriban… and beyond." - Darth Sion on the Trayus Academy
