Level/Map Design: 4/10 - 1/10 First game have better maps (compared to second game)
Sound: 2/10 - 2/10 Both horrible, no humanbeing should alowed to hear it.
Animations: 2/10 - 2/10 Both horrible, no humanbeing should alowed to watch it.
Cinematics: 2/10 - 2/10 Both horrible, no humanbeing should alowed to watch it.
Story: 6/10 - 1/10 First game has interesting story.
Linearity: 8/10 - 9/10 Both games are very linear. This is negative attribute in my POV.
Companions: 6/10 - 1/10 First game has interesting companions.
Companion-Pratoganist Interactions: 4/10 - 2/10 First is more interesting because of story.
Main Character: 8/10 - 2/10
Lore 6/10 - 1/10 protagonist and companions in second game are not exist in SW Universe.
Game/Combat Mechanics: 4/10 - 4/10 OK for 2005 -franchise- RPG games.
Crafting: 0/10 - 3/10 Second game has -some- crafting.
Things that keep players busy before or after main story: 0/10 - 0/10 Absolutely nothing.
-Star Wars KOTORs: Overwhelmingly Positive (to incourage future developers I guess)
Verdict: Play if its free but don't buy it at all. Obsidian must stay away from SW universe imho.
Foolishness.
Did you even play the games???
Wouldn't be the only time Avellone writes a DLC that completely blows out the original story out of the water.
Yes, played and finished both of them. I don't have stomach to finish second game twice though.
With 2, the story takes on a whole new dynamic. Like before, the Republic is in peril, but this time not from an obvious threat. While the Sith in 1 had a huge army and fleet, in 2, they lurk in the shadows. But not only are the Sith a threat, but also the internal politics of the Republic itself leaving it on the brink of collapse.
The dialogue in 2 also mentions a contrast between the tactics of Revan and Malak. While Revan did "attack" the Republic, the results tended to have a different outcome. Politicians would be assassinated who would later turn out to be corrupt and detrimental to the system. Measures would be taken to fortify specific worlds that would have otherwise been ignored. It's as if Revan was striking at the Republic to make it stronger, not weaker. All building to face an unseen threat from beyond known space. Something Revan was aware of and would have likely been addressed in KOTOR 3.
With 1 it's cut and dry who the bad guys are.
With 2, I question whether the bad guys in 1 were really the bad guys. Specifically Revan, did he actually fall to the Dark Side? Or did he use it as a means to an end? As unfinished as the game was, it had a much deeper story behind it, something to really make you think.
PS: I never played TOR so I don't know what that brings to the table.
I just realized that I didn't really say which was better, truly I can't see playing one without the other. So get them both, if price is an issue, look for a sale.
KOTOR II really changed how I view the entire franchise and I see a lot of other people like that, its gameplay has more depth but the maps feel empty, rushed or unfinished. Its best parts are when its exploring its own lore, when it happens its not a book kind of way, but it teaches you as if from some lived experience. Kreia is the best character of the franchise. Hands down. The visuals are more star wars but the tone is not.
KOTOR I has more short lived nostalgia, it has maybe the greatest plot twist Bioware had ever done and is more immersive. The opening level feels very fast paced. It doesn't look very star wars but this is hand waved because its before everything we knew, its a unique setting. It gets "Star Wars" right.
I just wish there is a Star Wars RPG game designed like Fallout(3+) or Elder Scrolls: Shaittload of things to do; shaittload of non-main quests with stories; open universe, freedom and lots of planets to travel; non-MMO. But no, there is no reason to do that, we love whatever they throw at us anyway.
