Is the game definitely using your Nvidia card or is it defaulting to integrated graphics?
Try setting the exe file to compatibility for WinXP SP3, also set it to run as administrator while you are there.
If still having problems, does the legacypc version of the game run properly?
How do I verify the game files? I downloaded the game from steam, doesn´t that happen automatically?
I´ll will give the legacypc version a try, but can I run that version in FullHD and with restored content?
Legacypc is the original game without the update. You would need to use Flawless Widescreen for the resolution and download TSLRCM from Deadlystream.
Before you resort to that check the "various start up crash solutions" section of this guide.

The Nvidia threaded optimisation fix and running in windowed mode may both be worth trying although I am just about out of ideas at this point.
