I hate the workbench in KotOR 2.
Ah yes the workbench. The place where my nightmares are crafted. I like the component system but components are rare and I don't like having a bunch of crappy upgrades while the others are locked behind component pay walls. It is my only huge problem with the game outside the glitches. I wish it was just like KotOR 1 where there was only a single type of upgrade for each of the weapon types and keep the components but make them way more frequent or purchasable at stores in large quantities. What do you guys think?

also I have the same rarity problem with the lab station and medical stuff.

I don’t have a problem with it anymore.

But I always take repair and go Sentinel, so the only skill I’m lacking is Demolitions (people take this, and it’s great but Repair gives you more components and has good stuff).

Either way the key to workbench success is how you upgrade your companions.

Toward the end of this video it explains how to upgrade your companions so you don’t have to worry about the problems you’re having.

Enjoy!

Repair = components

You have to break down items eventually, just get rid of things you don’t really care about.

As long as you pick of every item in each area, and all you should have components. You will find that, you should have less problems with getting components as you progress your skills and go through a planet or two.

I geenerally have no problems with it at all, you just have to be willing to get rid of old gear. For me, I break down mines, grenades, shields and upgrades (like some of the blaster ones) that I won't need to get more parts. Also break down datapads!

The game wouldn't be balanced if the Sentinel didn't have an extra incentive beyond being balanced and such, so the truth is the Sentinel will have the most appealing options. I don't level up Stealth much, but I get repair as a class skill when I make my character and focus on that instead.

Also, grab EVERY mine you can with your demolition trained characters, and get most of the XP, if you don't then I can't say I'm sorry for you if you still have problems with this later in the game. Just try your best, eventually you end up with items that break down into a lot of components, like those rebreather masks you end up getting or weapons you can't upgrade.. But help upgrade your other gear.

High Repair is one the KEYs to the workbench for both upgrading your items and getting the most components in general, while every skill will play a role. ^^

For a final thought, the upgrades you can make in this game aren't so much locked behind "component pay walls", as this is not a game that involves real money and it's also an RPG mechanic, like it or not. It really amounts to a character that becomes stronger as you go through the game, also if you have M4-78 the best way to make components is go there, sell some items, buy advanced medpacs on the droid planet and break them down (for 2x components).
Thanks for the help! This just made upgrading a lot more fun.

The upgrade system is one of the few things I enjoy about K2 more than K1 as it gives greater choice and variety.

You get so many items which are just complete crap and you don't want, and the economy is so broken that you always have more money than you need (unless you get lucky and have a bunch of super good and expensive items show up on Telos in which case you'll fall short there) which makes selling more or less pointless very early on, that you can afford to break down for components to make upgrades that you actually want.
Bao-Dur gets crazy skill points so you can have basically all his crafting skills maxed meaning you aren't even limited by your build in what you can and can't make because he can just make it all for you.

If you level up his intelligence once you can still get a lot out of him though.

It's also worth noting you can use T3-M4 to upgrade your items whenever he's with you. :)
Eh, I never saw the appeal of turning him into a Jedi, he can't use any of the robes and there are just better companions like Visas, the Handmaiden, Atton and Mira all of whom are/ can be Jedi too.
Bao-Dur's existence is purely to craft items in my playthroughs since I made him a Jedi in my first as well, he just wasn't very good because again he can't use any robes, is one of those companions where there are just better options and turning him into a Jedi causes him to get far less skills which is the whole appeal of him.

Yeah that too, it gives T3-M4 an actual purpose and reason to exist unlike K1 did.

It also messes up his gaining unarmed combat feats as the awarding of these to the jedi and tech classes do not stack afaik.

Bao-dur has a number of uses apart from the workbench in my games. On the surface of Telos his shield breaker attack is very useful against the mercs and he is also useful in getting through the shields in the military facility.

He has a part in unlocking the speeder on Nar Shaddaa and knows the code for the perimeter sensor on the Sith tomb mission on Dxun. He also has some dialogue with Tien Tubb (the repair shop next to the landing pad on Nar Shaddaa). I also use him in the academy sub level on Dantooine as I usually get my lightsaber there so with him I can construct it immediately.

But I rarely convert him to a jedi.

Is there even a point to unlocking the airspeeder? Every time I do it I get about 1 use out of it and then it's 'sabotaged beyond repair' upon returning to the landing pad.

Wasn't aware of the other two though, however the perimeter sensor thing doesn't sound worth swapping out someone who's useful in combat.

Well to get back on subject here, if you are a Jedi Sentinel and have Dao-Bur and just level him normally, technically you have all the skills you need right there. :Wreath:

Yes, that is the easiest way to access just about all the skills you might need for the workbench. Bao-dur isn't that bad in combat either. Get him a decent suit of medium armour and set him for unarmed combat and at the higher levels his bonuses allow him to not be a liability at least.

The trick at the workbench is to get a character to repair skill 20. Then, provided you are using the restored content mod, breakdown efficiency is 100%. Sell a few high value items for cash and break down the rest. That will eventually give you enough components to craft and install the maximum possible upgrades to the main character and all companions gear.

To keep things simple I ignore almost all upgrades that have a -ve effect on anything. That reduces the number to consider significantly. So for melee weapons just edge upgrades, agrinium grips and energy cells. Forget anything else. Armour gets upgrades that increase armour factor above all. Then a strength, regeneration or energy resistance underlay.

Just keep it simple.

Ya'll just need to wait to get Bao-Dur to level 19 after he has tons of skill points and a maxed out shield breaker. Then convert him after that. Or just not make him a Jedi. He is a lot more easy and fun to build as a tech specialist but I always convert him for the sake of the story.
