It certainly is possible to rescue them (or not...) with the restored content mod. They don't join with you, you do have to complete Malachor V alone, but you do have a choice over what happens to them.
IIRC, without TSLRCM it used to be possible to reach the cells they are meant to be in but the cells will be empty. I don't know why you apparently can't, but something seems to not be right.
Just one if the proofs people found this game got rushed before digging deeper.
One of the first things to go as you get older is supposedly memory. Looks like I'd better start arranging that place in a care home.
