It's great to hear you're interested in Classified: France '44. Sorry to let you down, but the countdown timer is a big portion of the tension in the game. You're working towards to the real world date when the Allies stormed Normandy, so it's vital you are able to keep your recruits in tip-top shape for that assault while you destabilise the Occupation.
It might help to know that you don't necessarily need to get a 100% victory for your efforts to be considered a success. But I don't want to spoil anything.
For your second question. Yes. You can save during missions and it will autosave after each turn. Unless, you're running an Ironman Mode Campaign. Ya badass.
Good to know about manual saves, but campaign timer is a deal-breaker.
I understand your justification for the timer, but how about a compromise -
Once the d-day is done, the campaign is officially over. But there is an option for post-game continuation like many games offer. Player can continue doing missions to complete everything the game has to offer in a single playthrough (irrespective of whether that makes sense storywise or not). If you have procedural missions, player can continue playing to their hearts' contentment, Level up their roster to the max. Perhaps replay old missions in higher difficulty or try out different approaches, without having to restart from scratch.
You can also consider adding campaign customization option to scale the timer up or down.
