Played this for something like 10 hours and for me it still need a lot work both in terms of content and polishing. If you've finished everything available on the market it can be a good filler while waiting for something like Zoria or i dunno, but that's kinda it.
In my view the innovations on tactical combat, and mission types especially on how the game handles overwatch and morale, push it so much above something like Phantom Doctrine.
No, the world level game isn't as good as games with more open worlds, but tactically it is just so much better than most tactical games. I'd play this over JA3 any day.
I'll try to avoid being too harsh to the game's detractors, but I just think it's a really impressive tactical achievement if you have the hardware to handle it.
To put it another way, the demo really stressed my hardware, wouldn't properly exit when I closed it, made me shut down my computer and really stressed me out about whether my computer would still be okay. I still preordered it, that's how much I've enjoyed it.
The progression is: all your stats go up from clothing and weapons but not much new occurs after the first 3 or so missions.
CF44 is superior to xcom on many levels imo.
The action and mouvement system especially has more granularity and is miles ahead in CF44. Xcom is very rigid in that regard, almost boardgame like. You move and take an action or sprint. In CF44 you can move, take some actions, move again and go on until you run out of action points (AP) or you're doing some turn ending action. This means there is a great range of skill you can unlock and then use during your turn, some being more AP hungry than others.
When a mission goes poorly in xcom I often feel a bit robbed. Because of the rigidity of the system it often comes down to the luck of the hits. While in CF44 you always feel like you could have optimised your movement and your skills usage better thanks to the granularity of the system. It feels like a puzzle you're trying to solve in the most efficient ways.
The moral mechanic in CF44 also plays a role into that. When shooting at an enemy you automatically apply moral damage whether you hit or not. It adds more consistancy since it's not luck based and you don't feel as awful as in xcom for missing. It also adds another layer of strategy and player agency which is great. Of course it also works against you so you need to be careful.
Outside of the missions xcom is superior tho. The map in CF44 doesn't have many interesting choices for you to make compared to the ship in xcom. I also find the story and writing more appealing in xcom. Longevity might also be an issue in CF44, the campaign seems a bit short and due to the ww2 setting the enemy and equipment variety is not on par with xcom.
This game is definitely way better than PD, although PD was OK.
.....and the lack of interaction with the resistance groups. They just function as "markets", instead of making them interesting allies, who can be called for support in missions for example.
Also the enemy groups patrolling the strategic map can´t be intercepted, just knocked out for 3 rounds.
For me, the strategic map is a joke and absolutely unnecessary in this way.
So many potential unused......
For example, I have more than 300 hours played on Jagged Alliance 3 and I can say for sure that CF:44 have absolutely nothing like JA3. JA3 have real-time exploration (with free movement and looting), rpg-like story (with tons of NPC's and side quests), unlimited soldiers and squads to hire (as much as your game-money can pay), big bosses to fight, a wide-open map for you to build your on path...not to mention that the turn-based combats themselves have different mechanics too. Don't listen to this comparison.
It's clearly inspired by XCOM2 and XCOM2 WOTC, so if thats what you looking for, you found it (but it's safe to play the demo first). Of course there are differences between them, otherwise CF:44 would be just a XCOM 2 copy with WWII setting, but the core idea is there.
Already hoping for another game like this. Maybe Polish resistance? Italy?
