I think this value is based on early reviews. Is the game more fun now after several updates?

I agree. Played the demo right off and it was ok. Bought it recently and have 8 hrs in . Not worth the retail $40 IMO. But for $10 on steam it's worth it

The game as it was at launch was pretty lackluster. It was very passive and didn't require you to "do" very much. The combat was pretty shallow. There have been several updates since then, including a massive overhaul of many core game mechanics. There's much more to "do" and the game as a whole is more complex. The combat still doesn't blow me away, but it's enjoyable.

I'd say it's worth picking up during the daily deal if you're interested in a more modern gangster sim game.

GameInformer gave it an awful review.
I dunno, I just bought it and have been playing it for awhile now, seems pretty good to me.

I think the bad reviews coming from people buying it for full AAA game price at launch and then realise its worth maybe the price of a indie game.

I bought it on Xbox for 60 euro(~78 USD) and while it is a pretty good game it was way too expensive for the content delivered, I would have paid maybe 15 euro(~20 USD) for it if I knew how shallow the game was at launch. But I got to suit myself this time, got caught on the hype a bit. :)

I havent played it in awhile and they promised some big updates to fix the game. I have no idea if they delivered.

EDIT:

Seems like they added a lot. Pretty much all that was really missing at launch and made the game shallow.

From store page:

"There have been several changes to Omerta - City of Gangsters in the most recent update:

New maps for multiplayer and sandbox modes
Enemy gang for sandbox mode, operating independently and taking over businesses - can both attack the player and be attacked by the player
Customizable game settings and goals for sandbox games
Economy overview panel for current businesses with their efficiency, profit, ect.
Visual representation of individual business types on the strategic map via icons
Additional difficulty setting and "Iron Man" option (saving progress in strategic mode disabled)
Massive overhaul of cover mechanics in turn-based combat
Introduction of multiplayer chat and several other minor fixes/changes"

EDIT2:

Have they added cars yet? Was rather silly at launch when the gangsters run on foot where ever they had to go.

Yes. There are a couple different quality cars you can purchase for varying price or you can carjack any car you want if you don't mind some extra heat from the police.
The game it's just crap, half-finished and there is no challange at all in it. Save your money for something else.
It's mainly because the citymap plays like a facebook game. The battles are ok but feel kinda B-grade with cheap effects.
It is because Metacritic is a load of bulls#it. It is an average scoring of OTHER peoples opinions on a game. There is a demo available, download it and decide for yourself instead of relying on others opinions.
Metacritic has a policy of only accepting the original review score, even if it's revised later. When this game was released it was deemed to be pretty-looking but woefully shallow, with no real challenge, and none of the depth of the same dev's Tropico 3-4. It was surprisingly expensive, too, for what it was.

People expected Tropico meets Gangsters, but - as someone else on this thread said - what they got was more like a casual Facebook game than a full-price PC strategy game.

Omerta has been improved quite a lot since release, but it'll always have that same low Metacritic score. It's probably best to think of Metacritic scores as a snapshot of critical opinion at the time a game is first released.

The score is low because the game is awful.

They patched it a bit, tossed in some more content, but an awful game with a little more content is still an awful game, but with a little more content.

Sometimes, not every time but sometimes, low metacritic scores are deserved.
