Diets & Deities is an upcoming rhythm cooking game developed by Larrikin Interactive, an indie studio based in Northern Territory, Australia. Discover the music and recipes from diverse cultures as you dodge to the beat and uncover the flavours of the universe.

You play as Nephele, the first (and potentially last) deity created in a millennia and it's up to you to dance and dodge your way through forgotten cultures, move to the beat, and eat your weight in long-lost dishes.

Each area, including its music and deity, is directly inspired by our team's backgrounds: Australian (with First Nations creatives), Balinese, Brazillian, and Chinese. Nephele unlocks real recipes the players can cook at home, all curated by the team from our local markets to childhood favourites.

Cultural Consent in Diets & Deities

We presented a talk at High Score[www.apraamcos.com.au], a convention for music and audio in games! We discussed cultural consent while creating Diets & Deities with our composer, Kuya James, and our cultural consultant and friend, Ben Tyler!

It was such a great opportunity to share our experience working with different cultures and we hope we inspired other game devs to approach different cultures in their work in healthy and creative ways!

And a huge thank you to APRA AMCOS for another amazing year at High Score! 🎉 ✨

…Oh my god! We are the first Northern Territory-developed game to be nominated for the AGDAs!!
We’re so excited to represent our home during Melbourne Games Week this October~ The AGDAs is a special yearly event that celebrates excellent games and we can’t believe we’re part of it!

This is an absolutely incredible achievement and I can’t wait for the awards to one day be overrun with loads of NT games >:3

Demo Feedback

I think this is in a very rough state. I think the worst part of the game is the mapping of the songs. It's hard to get into the rhythm when it's not obvious what element(s) of the song the cooking ingredients are synced with and it is beyond me how there is no sound when you pick up one successfully. I certainly see the Everhood influence and I think you should play Muse Dash or Taiko for a bit to see how rhythm games and the maps with just 2 buttons should feel (responsive, going with the flow of the son...

Songs are a bit too long.

it's not unmanageable but I can see if you're trying to get a full perfect that having to restart several of these songs would feel tiresome. I managed to get a p rank without much difficulty but by song 3 my hands were starting to get cramped.

Loose Cooking Theme

Linking music with cooking is a charming enough idea but this doesn't show in the gameplay. Rather than collecting the same one dish and avoiding red crystals we should really be collecting ingredients. Perhaps avoiding spoiled ingredients, or better yet avoiding ingredients not pictured within the recipe. Was also expecting some sort of attack mechanic to be introduced in the demo after the kitchen fire, but nothing....
