Possible cause of multiplayer limited mode
Hey guys,

So, I just realized something interesting. There's two "uplay"s: one that you can start up separately from steam, and one you boot up when you click "play game" in steam.

In fact, they're different, and they have different logins; I registered my AC3 with my steam "uplay" and when I log into the normal uplay it doesn't appear.

Here's the kicker; if you have the normal uplay booted up, and click the steam "play" button, your AC3 appears in the NORMAL UPLAY. The problem is that, it now pings you for your AC3 key, which you've probably dumped into your steam "uplay." If you log in, it won't give you your actual account with the key locked to it (at least I can't get it to do that yet).

It's like there's an "my@email.com+steam" and a "my@email.com" versions of your account...that aren't recognized properly between the two or something. I don't know, but this is a start at least.

Steps to try this:
1) Boot up Steam.
2) Boot up UPlay. (Not through steam)
3) Click Steam "Play" button next to AC3.

It's not just a problem with the Steam copies of the game, I got mine through Gamestop and I'm having the issue. It's definitely something with the Uplay servers, not Steam.

Thanks, I'm assuming more information helps everyone try to get their ♥♥♥♥ fixed. I assumed there was some disconnect; now that I've been able to log on once or twice I'm assuming it's just server load issue.

Hey finaly I got a solution:
Steam does not open the ports or it opens wrong ports so you must add the Uplay Launcher and the AC3MP.exe in your Steam game folder to your Firewall.
After that you must set-up the correct portforwarding in your router.
The Ports are:
Asassins Creed III
[TCP] (remote port) 80, 443
[UDP] (local port) 3074

Uplay Game Launcher
[TCP] 1300, 1400, 14008

If you have a Fritz!Box you can also add your Computer as Exposed Host what will erase all port problems but then you need a good firewall.
(sorry for my bad grammar but I am German :D )

As has been said many, many times already, it's not an issue with ports, or firewalls. The issue is Ubisoft's severs and/or netcode.

The first few times I tried MP, I was forced into Limited Mode too... then I just kept clicking to reconnect and after a couple of times I got connected... No more problems for me.
Wakey 2012 年 11 月 24 日 下午 4:18
It got nothing to do with ports...
If I manage to get past the "Ubisoft services is down" error I can see that my NAT is open. And my router is just set up for Steam (Some pre-installed setup).
I've tried disabling my firewall both on my PC and router. None of which helps.
So the problem is not in our end.

This solved the problem for me and three other friends who bought over steam and could only use limited mode so try and do not talk sh** here: http://ubisoft-de.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15618
the problem is that if you install with uplay it creates all connections you need but steam does not know how to do so (i think or it simply does not do it :) )
so if you add these ports to your portforwarding list you can play AC3MP and be happy

EDIT: the multiplayer has nothing to do with steam !! steam is only starting uplay with a preset because of that you can not start your game without steam. So it makes no sense if your router is configured for steam

Opening these ports worked PERFECTLY, dark_eagle. Thanks so much for sharing this with us! Now I can finally get those rewards and play the multiplayer mode as intended.

Looks like you're on to something.
What I don't understand is why some people who bought the game through Steam is able to play MP. So this "two uPlays" can't be happening to everyone?
It's happening to me, but i CAN play MP :)

i know why many have the limited mode problem its cuse of steams Uplay, when i launched the game first time it installed some things and Uplay but, i already had Uplay installed now, the problem is, i have 2 Uplay launcher, the one, i have on my desktop and a build-in Uplay from steam, wich steam launches when starting game, so i logged into that Uplay and registered my game there but later, i realised that my other games wich i purchased (retail) werent there, so it seems, i now have 2 accounts on the same account but, they are the same account kinda confusing, also some other options in the Uplay that steam launches are missing like the shop etc. when i start Uplay on my desktop and login into the same account it shows my other 2 assassin's creed games ,brotherhood and revelations. but if i lauch the Uplay that steam launches, i can only see assassin creed 3 and the other 2 are missing. so that means, the Uplay from steam isnt properly connecting or linking the accounts, i hope this gives some insight to ubisoft and/or steam, what the problem is.

Edit: i forget to mention that. also, you dont unlock the but strange thing is i do receive my points for some, i did get points and others not. ingame, i cant connect to any ubisoft service.
im directly connect to internet via modem so router is not the problem.i dont have a antivirus since there all bad and as for firewall, i have only windows one and its properly configured in both normal and advanced. i really think the Uplay that steam launches is the problem
I'm just gonna take a moment to debunk this real quick.
Uplay and the alleged steam uplay are the same thing. Don't believe me? Check where your non-steam uplay is intsalled. Now run AC3 from steam so that Uplay comes up. Open task manager and find the uplay process. right-click and go to file location. Same location. Unless you manually install uplay to another location that is.
It is odd though that launching uplay by itself doesn't give access to AC3 but launching ti from steam does...

As for the port forwarding, my game worked fine the first 2 days it was out here in the states. Ever since the consoles got their 1.02 patch I can't connect most of the time and get limited mode quite often. Sometimes I can get out of limited if I repeatedly try hitting go online but it's not consistent. So I highly doubt limited mode is because of ports (at least for the past 2 days).
Over on the Ubi forums a few people mentioned it was an issue with the account management system or something. This makes some sense considering I keep losing my character customizations randomly. Hell I even lost 3000 Abstergo credits earlier... (they did return after I completely closed the game and re-opened but the customizations had to be redone completely)
I dunno guys. I dunno what to say any more. I played they hell outta it for 2 days and now it rarely works at all... Hopefully they fix it soon.
And btw, excellent investigative skills topic creator. That was good thinking.

My MP finally works. I had the dreaded Limited mode only. I did many things such as 1) creating a shortcut to my desktop from steam. 2) the whole firewall port unlock 3) fixing the whole VDC blah blah blah redistribution thing. 4) Updating windows itself. 5) deleting steams version of UPLAY. downloading UBIsofts UPLAY and connecting.

Now What I do is login to UPLAY first then open my shortcut to AC3. and the game connects.

Hope this info helps. I want to be able to kill you guys on MP :)

As for whether or not this issue actually relates to different Uplay Launchers, I cannot say. I have contacted the support of Ubisoft and am awaiting their reply at the moment. I can confirm that this issue has, at least for a great many, NOTHING TO DO WITH PORTS. Still, I would go and forward them since it will definitely make for a better and smoother online experience.

I would also like to point out that Ubisoft is aware of the glitch that the key is already in use for another account, yet it's odd to see it happen on the same account. Here's a link for reference, but I doubt this will solve your problem. ( http://ubisoft.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16828 )
