Worst controls ever
Cannot play this game. Cannot get used to the controls. Its never doing what I expect. Its terrible and frustrating this way. I have no problems with other games only with Assassin's Creed. Also the Quick time events are terrible.

Agree, they decided to make up their own crap rather than keeping the standard of other games, which is shameful since Im sure they lose lots of potential players.

Totally agree with you about QTE. The second cue appears so quickly I don't have time to react. Think they got the idea from Resident Evil but there the reaction time is a bit friendlier. I remapped the Interact/Use key from "E" to "L Shift" like in AC:B and AC:R. Unfortunately, the cues appear on the screen relative to where they are on the keyboard BUT the LShift still appears where the E should be. Guess it's going to take a lot of practice. Hopefully, I won't have to use a QTE to get 100% in any mission.

I've had AC3 for ages but I've only just got around to playing it. The more I play the more I'm stunned at how such a great looking game can play so badly. The obvious reason is that it is very much a console game, designed for controllers and the sort of play style that obviously is attractive to console gamers. On the PC it's just plain cr*p. I have to hit the Q button to use a firearm? WTF? And when I go to the trouble of picking up a musket I've still got to move to within stones-throw range to use it? Why can't I use the F key aiming mode and fire from 50 or 100 metres away? What were the game designers thinking? And melee combat is endlessly frustrating. All of a sudden I'm surrounded by enemies and I fight like I'm drunk. There's no way I'll be buying AC4, I'd rather just punch myself in the face and get all the frustration and pain over and done with.

Proper members of the PC Master race should be able to afford a controller to play this the way it was meant to be played.

Bunch of wannabes...

Well there's some truth in that. Clearly it was intended to be played with a controller. Porting it across to mouse and keyboard was doomed to failure. But I'm a mouse and keyboard guy, nothing beats the speed and precision of M+KB. No more Assassin's Creed for me. I understand now.

I can't for the life of me get a smooth fight sequence with keyboard. And the equipment menu is a joke for m/kb users. Thank god it was only $5 on amazon.

I'm not having any trouble with the fights on M+K. what's wrong with it on your end?

I just hold the equipment menu key (R by default, I think) and then scroll to the weapon I need with the scroll wheel, then release. It's pretty responsive for me.

i agree completely, i had to remap the supid block key to right mouse button (however had the brilliant idea to put it on E key need to be shot down)

the only real problem now is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid lockpick QTE, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ man, sometimes i want to punch the wall, the game is good, but those little problems bring great rage moments..... thank god i got it from steam 75% sale

OMG the lockpick is insanely frustrating. I thought it was just me, maybe I was doing something wrong. That is one of the worst-designed mechanics for a game I've seen. It keeps "resetting" on me and Connor removes the lockpick tool from the lock constantly. Then, I finally get it to the proper right-left spot....and it moves ever so slightly once I start the W-S sequence and have to start all over. Then, to top it off...once I start pressing the mouse button repeatedly..it resets all over AGAIN!!! It is truly horrendously bad.

Yup. Never again.

Any idea if the controller works (better) for the lockpicking than M+K? I haven't tried it yet. I hate using a controller with a PC game, but sometimes it's necessary. Driver San Francisco was the only game so far that I HAD to use a controller with.

"Meant to be played" in that sentense, suggests a cr@ppy port, nothing less. Which seems to be fairly accurate.

I just started to play this game, and the CONTROLLER gave me problems early on. When picking a lock for the first time, holding both sticks in position and hitting RT didn't work at all. Had to switch over to almost just as bad keyboard/mouse controls, which at least worked.

360 controller works better, overall, but I would NOT recommend buying one for this game, because it's one of the worst games I've ever played, when it comes to controls.

It seems to be a casual combination of pressing E and spacebar, and the occasional left mouse button. I might eventually get back to it.

Hitting the lowest resolution button my adjustable mouse when I first enter the lockpicking sequence helps quite a bit. Still frustrating sometimes, and just out of curiosity: do some locks have multiple "stages" to them? I get to the end of the lockpicking sequence, but then it starts over. Only happens occasionally, and I was wondering if the more difficult locks had multiple stages like that. I didn't know the RMB reset the lock either. Onscreen, it does say to press the "mouse buttons repeatedly", so I could see where that would cause confusion too.

Did you find the General Store? I think that's where you can buy maps of different things, like: Almanac pages, treasure chests, the Peg Leg Trinkets, etc. Somebody's got maps for sale, and you just purchase them as you make cash from selling all the pelts you get from killing animals.
