AWESOME GAME. NOT A DOOM GAME BUT A GREAT GAME REGARDLESS

I've been playing the new DOOM, it's very fast and chaotic and I love it. It's way better than this game.
Yet coming back to the BFG edition, I honestly expected it to look way worse than it does but holy cow, apart from some stiff animations and clearly 2D textures, the game actually looks really clean and sharp. The lighting holds up great, the use of light and dark creates a thick atmosphere that none of the other games have reached. Or tried to.

On one hand, the combat is slow and kind of lame. Expect fight after fight in tight corridors with little maneuverability and not much cover. On harder difficulties you really need to play tactical, like it's Rainbow Six or FEAR without slowmo. The shotgun is inconsistent with a slow firing speed, the assault rifle lacks a bit of punch and the pistol is useless. Enemies can soak up a lot of bullets and hit hard as well. It's easier than the chaos found in any other Doom game, yet at times the most unpredictable, and the most repetitive.

On the other hand, after playing Doom Eternal and The Dark Ages, the slower pace of DOOM3 along with the more cohesive nature of its level design, DOOM 3 is actually better than it's ever been. The original DOOM games barely gave any context to the violence, and the levels make no sense when compared to how humans actually create structures. If you've ever worked in industrial settings and factories before, a lot of DOOM 3's world actually starts to make sense, making it feel like a "real" place you are exploring. And since weapons, ammo and health are limited and pickup only, in between combat you want to actively explore every inch of the UAC to top of your supplies before the next rough fight. It feels almost Resident Evil in nature when you're running through a hall with 4 hp trying to get to the next med station. It's not a very scary game in my opinion but it can get stressful and you should save often.

Should DOOM play like a Half Life game? Maybe not and perhaps that's why we've only seen it once. Back in the day DOOM 3 was criticized for not changing with the times and playing too much like an old school FPS. I think it's an interesting time capsule. 2004, when games like Half Life 2, Halo 2, and Resident Evil 4 were coming out and shaking up the industry and DOOM 3 seemed plainly vanilla, but with some of the sickest graphics at the time. I like it a little more every time I play it and own it on multiple systems, it's a good game

A lot better than most people say. It's pretty close in gameplay to the orignal doom 1 and 2, just with a horror twist and reloading.

With the release of The Dark Ages, I went back and played this one. I still consider it the best DOOM in the franchise.

To me, DOOM isn't just about fast and chaotic, it's about a feel. I remember staying up until 5am playing the original DOOM on my buddy's 486DX back in the 90s. I had never been so afraid of a game until then. I can still vividly remember those horror induced chill-bumps running down my neck, and wanting to scream, but no matter what I couldn't look away. I was hooked.

DOOM3 perfectly refined that formula. Yes, it has a lot of jump scares, but even today it's still as horrific as Hell itself. It will still scare you, and make you a twitchy reflexive mess. After this title, DOOM got a lot less scary with more focus on action, and this makes me sad.

DOOM3 was the last real "DOOM" game.

Although I'm aware, I'm still not quite sure why this game gets so much hate.

It's fun with a liminal yet unnerving industrial atmosphere that keeps you on edge from start to finish. Sure it's a departure from the original two games and while it's somewhat caught in that awkward experimental era of jank pc gaming it is, at its core, channelling an extremely similar vibe to that of the original games.

I played the original on release, and i have a vague sense that i enjoyed it. Particularly when i discovered the famous "duct tape mod" that gave you a flashlight that could attach to your weapons. Maybe the game was actually pretty good when it came out, beyond the spectacle of it - graphics and the like. But this is not a game that is likely to be fun for a modern audience. I feel like i still have to finish it, but it's just so tedious, and i'm astonished that it's still getting decent reviews in the modern era.

I'm not sure i have the energy to go through every aspect of this game, so let's start with the worst bits and see if i keep writing.



My god, every gun in this game is awful. They all sound and feel like wet paper towels. There's no weight to anything. It's crazy that every weapon sounds worse than the original Doom / Doom 2 weapons.

The pistol sounds like a suppressed 22 with sandpaper in the slide.

The shotgun is a melee only weapon - if you're not literally holding it against an Imp's eyeball, it's going to take four shots to kill it.

I guess the assault rifle is meant to sound futuristic, but it just makes it seem like it's doing nothing. And it is basically doing nothing - ten shots to either the face or a foot of an imp are equally effective.

The grenades might be the worst. They are like water balloons. Splish! Splish! With hardly any visible explosion. They are the absolute opposite of satsifying to use.

The chain gun shoots incredibly slowly. I don't just mean that the fire rate is slow. The bullets are slow. It's like you're just releasing a few wasps and asking them to go over at a brisk walking pace to attack the baddie. Who designed this? If an enemy is more than 20 feet away and is moving perpendicular to where you are aiming, you have to LEAD them! With a chain gun! This is so dumb.

The plasma rifle might be the best of the bunch, but that's like saying the best high jumper you know can clear a dead raccoon after it was smashed flat on the road. In the orginal Doom 3, the plasma rifle lit up stuff, did it not? I swear i used to use the plasma rifle instead of switching back to the flashlight. But in the BFG edition, it's a bright ball that can blind you and hide your target, but it absolutely casts no light on anything else.



Dark as hell, with a wimpy flashlight and no realism in how lights actually work. The walls in almost every room are shiny, and yet a very bright room can still have a random corner that is absolutely pitch black. Every room has five pieces of equipment that are perfectly placed to let a zombie shamble out of, and every hallway has a large metal panel that falls off the ceiling to partially mask the sound of an imp teleporting in.

It's just so samey. Over and over - obvious jump scare after obvious jump scare. It's not even remotely scary - you're just going to sit there rolling your eyes until you need an ophthalmology consult.

And the codes. Good lord, the codes. I skipped almost every single weapons cabinet, because nothing ruins pacing faster than having to open your stupid PDA to read the 100th email that just blasts out the security codes. What is the point? No wonder this place went to hell - not a single person in the joint respects any aspect of security. And if it's going to be that silly, why not just hand it to the player so that they can keep shooting things.

If it was restricted to only "secret" things, the cabinet codes would have been fine. But it shows up every two minutes, and ends up being incredibly tedious.



This game barely qualifies as an FPS. You are in first person, sure. You shoot things, sure. But it's mostly a jump scare tech demo that fails to scare and fails to impress with its tech.

Shooting things in the face does not seem to do more damage - so you are not rewarded for accuracy. You are mostly in tight corridors, so you're not rewarded for maneuvering. Enemies are not staggered, so you are not rewarded for your reaction times. You cannot get out of the way of a leaping imp, even when you know to anticipate it, so you are not even rewarded for guessing which door is going to have an ineffectual jump scare.

There are a lot of great FPS games that still hold up today - Quake, Half Life, Turok, and more are still fun to play in the modern era. This game is not among those.

EDIT: I finished it, and it has been uninstalled, never to return. BORING.
