Good luck.
EDIT: I re-read your post and you appare to have an AMD video card, not an NVidia, so the driver trick may not work for you. :(
P.S - Nice choice on the Alienware, they are sweet machines, I love mine. :)
I've been a steam user for a very long time and have had issues here and there, but now-a-days it has been very solid and reliable for me.
In any case, try going to:
C:\Users\<your name here>\Saved Games\id Software\DOOM 3 BFG\base
And deleting (probably better to cut/paste elsewhere just in case) everything in the folder, EXCEPT for the savegame folder :P
Hopefully that will fix the problem for you, as it did for me :]
ALSO: with the new LOD bias slider, max detail is all the way to the LEFT, so don't just automatically crank it up.
ALSO ALSO: I suggest taking the brightness all the way down to the left as well, to match the original Doom 3 style :P
@DV8ER: Yeah I like Steam, more than Origin as a matter of fact. I just sometimes hate the small issues like not being able to run games or random updates. I will still use Steam until Valve or some other company comes up with something better. Anyway yeah for AMD drivers I have to go through Dell. And the latest driver I already have and its from 8/2011. And Dell has yet to update it. I love my Alienware M17. Its a good laptop and machine. The only regret I have is going with an AMD graphics card instead of Nvidia. Oh well my next Alienware is going to be Nvidia.
@Commissar bacon: Yeah I got to work using the link above. And when I remembered playing Doom 3 I got scared so much. And I still am. There are so many jumps and scares. The only thing I hate is that they made the flashlight attached to your suit, instead of making it a weapon. Makes it less scary and tense.
Go into your Doom 3 BFG Edition folder that's in your steamapps location, find the folder msvc_2010, open it up, and run the vcredist_x86 manually. Usually the vcredist_x86 is automatically run whenever a new game is launched for the first time through Steam, but for some reason, Doom 3 BFG Edition doesn't do this.
Customer support is completely incompetent, telling people their usual default run of "delete the clientregistry.blob and check your router" which just doesn't work. I even told them EXPLICITLY "I don't even get the standard first-time-run C++ Redistributable window." There's something about Doom 3 BFG Edition's programming that doesn't run the vcredist_x86 program on its first run, and so that might make it unplayable. (For some reason, I could run Doom 3 BFG Edition on one computer despite this problem, but that computer also had normal Doom 3 installed once upon a time.)
