Censored maps

"This is a demonstration of how the secret Wolfenstein maps in the version of Doom 2 packed with Doom 3: BFG Edition are censored. Unlike previous attempts of censorship which deleted these maps entirely, the maps were retained but with heavy content edits.

If you didn't watch the video:
- MAP31 "Wolfenstein" has been renamed to "IDKFA"
- MAP32 "Grosse" has been renamed to "Keen"
- MAP31's Spear of Destiny track "Evil Incarnate" and MAP32's Wolfenstein 3D track "The Ultimate Challenge" have both been replaced by the standard Doom 2 track "DOOM"
- All groups of SS Guards have been replaced by groups of Zombiemen
- All swastika and Hitler-related decorative imagery have been removed from the wall textures, making the levels look quite plain. This also makes several secrets more difficult to find.
- In the main wad file, most of the SS Guard sprites have been replaced with a dummy Zombieman sprite. However, the SS Guard sounds are still present.

And while unrelated to the censorship, you can also see the red cross on medikits. stimpacks, and berserk packs (2:55) has been replaced by a pill graphic due to the wishes of the Red Cross. This change originated with the Xbox Live Arcade release of Doom 2 in 2010."

I can understand taking out the Red Cross logo, but I'm not sure why they removed the swastikas. This game's already rated M. Far cry from the days when id was considered a rock star game developer that didn't give a ****.

Maybe it's the Bethesda takeover, they don't want to be associated with it. Not a big deal really, but a sign of the times.

what do think, bethesda somehow thinks they will be associated with the red cross and somehow people might view them in a more negative light becauseof it? or that the red cross had their hand out for "royalties" for their "intellectual property"? or that are they afraid their pristine image might be sullied by an appearance in a video game along side the image of "the evil swastika"? oh wait, there are no more swatikas, at least that's what i learned in history class. so i guess they wanted their share of the profits for the use of the likeness of "their" image...

as for the swastikas being removed, that's quite simple, it's because people, whitey in particular, believe that if they refuse to aknowledge history then it simply didn't happen...

That's idiotic. Damn, who cares? It's not offending me in any way. Damn, it'd better to remember and make fun of it than cover your own sh*t and pretend you doesn't sh*t at all. And I am russian, we are still making fun of Stalin and Soviets (along with the whole world) and we don't try to cover this. What's the reason? It's just history, experience gained. The level is from Wolf 3D, and Wolf 3D was about Nazis. Nazis love swastikas (which is symbol of sun, originated from middle asia, was used by hundreds of different nations). What's wrong with it? Censor games this way is like portraing movie about Vietnam and make all the Vietnamese soldiers tall, wide and black, wearing top hats. It's like running from yourself. Actually I still think that censoring games offerd a lot more people than swastikas do. Not to mention that swastikaz offends only complete idiots. Other mediums (books, movies) got over this already, why games can't?

p.s.: hah, I've forgot that valve are scared about 'n4z1' words too (hearts hearts hearts). Makes great sense together with letting publishers eff up some nations at whole (releasing ghetto-versions for germans and russians with cut content... :D

Wow thanks for this posting that really makes me mad tbh. I used to love goign through that lvl and kicking ass. The lvl looks completely gutted as well as it appears a lot of the flares are missing. Does the doom bfg edition overwrite your original doom steam games or is it a safe deal?

Ha ha, did you really just say that? I am white and I grew up in a mostly white community and our classes taught us about World War II and they taught us about Hitler and the Nazis. And there are plenty of movies and television shows that talk about it and use their symbolism.

On conclusion, stop trying to make up stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about white people. The censorship was mostly likely on a developer or distributor level.

Germany is a good market for games and the like, but anything with n a z i stuff it is illegal, and can't be sold/displayed. I think there is another country or two.

The Red Cross asked for thier logo look-alike to be removed. Again, a legal thing.

Simple stuff, but idiots make a big deal of it.

What do you think will happen to you if you went to Germany and wore that n a z i crap on a t-shirt? ..the local hicks would get ya before the cops, asuming you put it on AFTER you got in the country. You aint gettin' in with it on, proll'y ship yer butt back.

Afaik, any depiction of Nazi related material is illegal in Germany, so that may be why it was removed from the BFG edition, to not have to make a separate versions for Germany.

Actually its the other way around. Crosses have been the symbol of life for centuries before red cross existed. So changing it to pills (which can create more conversity) doesent really fix anything. I can understand removing the swasticas for people who had been discriminated from the Third Reich. Apparently blue men uniform is horrible since it looks so much like the SS soldiers yet killing an underage kid Keen to bits is A okey.
