Doom 3 BFG is it's own game, you need to load up BFG to play the Old Dooms, so no extra copies.
No, when you boot up Doom 3: BFG, it's all one game, and you choose what game you want to play in the menu.
Honestly, it all boils down to graphics. If you really want a graphical improvement on an already graphically good looking game, I would say go for it. There are, however, free HD mods out there....
The new Doom 3 chapter/episode is kind of sort. It is fun, but again kind of short.
Doom 1 and 2 are a part of the BFG edition. Basically, when you load up the game, you have an option to play Doom 1, 2, 3(and its expansions). So you can't gift them to anybody. There are achievements to Doom 1 and 2 so if that's your thing....
I think you get a discount if you already own Doom 3.
Bottom line, if you want an updated Doom 3 look, then I would say yes. Otherwise, ehhhhhh....

I added bfg to my cart, I saw no discount. Unless it adds it after you pull the trigger, pretty sure they just screw you. (I already own d3, expansions, and the classic dooms. Anything bfg has for me should basically be free.)
There are legal ways to mod the original Doom 3 so that it does have high resolution graphics. I would guess ModDB would be the place to look. Some of the mods there pretty much offer a free BFG experience.
Like I said before, The Lost does not add a whole lot to the series. Honestly, I would say go on Youtube and look up a Lets Play or a walkthrough to see if you want to buy BFG.
It is a shame that the BFG version does not offer a Steam Workshop option.
