DOOM 3 BFG Edition crashes on loading screen
Hi,

I'm trying to run Doom 3 BFG edition, I select Doom 3 from the list and try to start a new game, but when I click on any of the difficulty settings it gets stuck on the loading screen and eventually crashes.

System Specs:
Windows 7 (Up to date)
Intel Core i5 760 @ 4 Ghz (tested stable with OCCT, Intel Burntest, 3DMark xxxx and various other games)
8Gb Ram @ 1600Mhz (stock)
Asus ATi Radeon 5770 (stock with latest drives 13.9)
Sound Blaster Xfi (Drivers up to date)

Everything is up to date, this is the only game that crashes when loading.

Does anybody else have this issue?

Try 13.11beta. Also make sure you don't have any fancy settings in Catalyst, especially for AA.
I have almost the same issue. I select DOOM 3, pick a difficulty, the "Mars City" load screen appears then I have to use CTRL ALT DEL just to close the program.

Windows 7 Professional

AMD FX Six core @ 3.50GHz

8GB RAM

64bit OS

Same issue for me.

W7 X64
AMD Six Core 6130
8 gb
Sapphire 7950

Stuck on loading screen.

You guys never used computers before? :) Play with Catalyst setting after you update drivers. AMD's drivers are crap. One of the worst pieces of software out there. There are a few settings that will bog down Rage and BFG.

This is the error stuff I get when trying to run the game. Unfortunately I know very little about computers and have absolutely NO IDEA what the problem is. Can anyone help??? Running Windows 7

Why don't you post entire log? It's impossible to say why looking at what you posted :/ Something tells me you need to update your video drivers first.

Sorry - didn't realise there was tons more info. Here's the complete error log.

A strange temporary fix I found out about is that if you start a multiplayer match, it fixes it at least until you close the game again, and then you have to do it again. (click Multiplayer, click Create Private match, it'll load you into a map, then exit and then singleplayer should work fine).

EDIT: After checking it a few more times to see if it works all the time, it doesn't; sometimes it crashes on loading multiplayer, but it seems to work more often than not, and when it does work it appears to always work when you try singleplayer afterwards. Again, just a temporary fix until we find out about a permanent solution.

^^ Update your video driver from Intel's website.

Initializing OpenGL driver
...creating GL context: failed to create OpenGL 3.2 context

That means either driver is old, or your hardware doesn't support OpenGL 3.2; if that's the case (old hardware) - you won't be able to run BFG or Rage or Doom 4 or new Wolfenstein.
Artemis Dec 20, 2013 @ 12:54pm
Okay, I've tried every possible graphics combination in the Catalist control centre, I've even went as far as to disable as much stuff as I can, like Anti-aliasing, edge-smoothing etc.

Still the game freezes at the loading screen.
It plays the UAC intro video, but when it loads the Mars City map it just hangs there, and when I press ALT+TAB the game crashes. It doesn't like me ALT+TABbing...

I've also tried the BETA drivers with default settings, had the same issue so reverted to the release version of the ATi driver again.

Is this an ATi Only issue or does nVidia users also get the freeze when loading the first map?

*I haven't tried Nyon's method yet, will do that as soon as possible.
radioman970us Dec 20, 2013 @ 5:57pm
loading multiplayer game first works for me MOST of the time.
Sharkfood Dec 20, 2013 @ 7:44pm
If you have a Radeon card + 13.9 drivers, you will either need to start a Multiplayer game first, then single player, OR download the older OpenGL file in this thread and place it in the game directory:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/208200/discussions/0/846958724796395601/

Others have reported the new 13.11 beta drivers also seem to work for a number of folks.

Good luck!

I'm done with Steam. Period. When you gotta hack stuff just to get it to run it's time to say it's junk. For some reason Steam keeps trying to default to a standard '4x3' mode when my monitor is a '16x9' widescreen. Can't change it and I'm tired of the Microsoft mentality of Steam trying to make stuff needed (video settings, audio settings, etc.) as inaccessible as possible for 'protection'. Just plain tired of Steam. What happened to the 'good old days' of ini files and 'setup utilities' and so on that would allow you to adjust stuff? Steam is just plain garbage and I'm just too sick and tired of having to hunt and hack to try and get stuff to work. Finally, someone (Valve) is even more messed up than Microsoft. But like said, DONE. Outta here.
motorsep Dec 24, 2013 @ 12:47am
Get yourself educated. You have old PC to begin with, 2Gb of RAM in almost-2014 ? Seriously ?

Your inability to run games has nothing to do with Steam. If you had a game without Steam, installed from CD/DVD, you would have had same issues.

But, we won't miss you. Please don't hit yourself with the door on your way out ;)
Artemis Dec 26, 2013 @ 8:56am
@motorsep
For your info, this game will run with 512MB ram and a 6600GT, so he's ram specs has nothing to do with the fact that the game doesn't run....

Infact, most 2013 games will still run with 1GB - 2GB system ram.

Next time when you post something, make sure it's relevant to the issue instead of just trolling on people's system specs....

@gohanssm.aceman I'm not sure if an Intel Mobile Express series 4 is actually supported, but try downloading the latest display drivers and try again?
