Doom 3: Useless Edition (get the original version instead!)
For those of you who consider buying Doom 3, do not get BFG Edition! Get the original instead (and RoE expansion if you like). Things BFG Edition changed for worse:

- Compressed textures with heavy color banding. What looks OK on TV does not look good on a computer monitor. Original D3 has better looking textures. BFG edition looks like it's running at poor 16bit colour even if that is not the case.

- Muffled sounds. Original had more clear sound if playing with a good sound setup

- No muzzle flashes! This just ruins the game for me: in a dark room your gunfire does not light the surroundings up! In original D3 that was a huge part of game look.

- No original D3 mods support. No sikkmod for you, BFG Edition.

There are some improvements like a new flashlight mechanic but it is ruined by stupid looking flashlight model that looks like it's accidentally stuck in a marine armor LOL. Achievements are OK but hardly redeem all the shortcomings. Original Doom 3 supports widescreen just as good with a couple of console commands.

IMO this version should had not been released on PC. Original is much better.

I think BFG edition does somewhat support modding now, its just a hard workaround and you wont get all the mods available for Vanilla D3 as modders aren't making anything for BFG or not porting current mods over.

Anyway's here's some screens of my different settings in D3.
-Vanilla modded vs BFG
-CG_Parm 22
-Dark
-Nightmare (Less filmgrain version of Dark)
-Parallax Occlusion Mapping addition
-HQ Menu and Load screens

Particularly love CG_Parm 22 and Nightmare.
Make sure to also check out the last pictures on the difference between no Parallax and with it on. Big difference on textures (Third pic shows it best)

*Keep in mind these are old screenshots I took awhile back. My config looks much different now that I have configured/customized the mod a bit more to my preferences. Another thing to take note of is that I have my Nvidia colors customized to my monitor, so depending on your monitor/color settings my screenshots may look too dark or too bright, its up to you to set your settings. Best one to set if you have an Nvidia video card would be the "Digital Vibrance" settings in Nvidia Control Panel, which enriches the colors in anything.

The mod also lets you change the "color" of the environment. Here's one using a different number, 22 I believe which removes the darker tone and makes it more color vibrant.

This edition is five games in one give or take

So I would say it is worth it on a discount

The edition is OK, it has proper wide screen support and 120 fps, no fiddling with config files is needed. The price, however, is unacceptable. Bethesda seems to forget about id games. Other games published by them go on proper sales, this one never does, the base price is also insane, you can get new AAA titles cheaper sometimes.

No he doesn't. You are one delusional/blind person to think a game made in 2003 looks better than the BFG edition. I have been playing doom for 20 years and I think this version is way better. Btw, no one really cares about your opinion. Why even make a thread where you whine like a b!tch?

Obviously you've never player original Doom 3 at Ultra settings where it doesn't have that nasty texture compression artefacts that plague BFG edition. And not having a dynamic muzzleflash light in a modern game is a crime.
You can't even mod neither doom 3 nor the classic doom games in BFG edititon! I really doubt you've been playing doom this long.

I partially agree with Fire. Just because BFG edition is new does not garantee that it will be better than the original. Yes; I have played the original Doom 3 on PC and also own BFG on my account. I kind of regret buying it even though I only payed $7 dollars for it brand-new. New is not always better Celtic Warrior. Sometimes the originals make the best impression.

Apolonio, you act like people normaly say that the newer game is the better one. This almost never ever happens. I for myself often like a sequel or a remake better, but I feel always very alone with that opinion, because normaly people are just hating on newer versions or newer games in a series just because thats a rule they have to follow. If it was for them, they'd all still use DOS instead of Windows and would never play anything else then their DOS-games. And they would feel fine if the world always stayed like that, but the world is about evolution. If you dont follow evolution you will never experience new things.

The problem with remakes nowadays or remasters is that they really lose the soul of the original game. I felt that way with Metro 2033 compared to its redux remaster, they made the game brighter and more colorful, even more consol-ish feel to it, that to me is not a proper evolution of the title since the original games whole atmoshpere of depression and hopelessness was lost when they decided to make it all colorful and bright.

This one however was just pointless if you ask me, the things they added really weren't that all important and to even degrade the level of quality the original had is just murder. Like Fire said, they downgraded a lot of things in this version which again doesn't seem like a proper evolution. If it improved on everything the original did, while not taking away anything from it as well, then I'd say its good.

Besides look at what could be achieved with mods in the orignal game!
My doom 3 still looks like a game that game out just today! its amazing. I understand Doom BFG does have methods to use some mods, but not all of them are supported.

I picked it up because of the 3D option, but the 3D isn't done very well. I use a 3D monitor for my main desktop monitor and I've played a bunch of 3D games. For whatever reason, Doom 3 BFG has a lot of ghosting issues, it looks like they slapped it on at the last second as an after thought.
Whiteytighty Jun 21, 2015 @ 6:42pm
I mostly bought this (2 years ago?) for the unreleased small expansion. I was never into modding the original game (outside of co-op and classic doom), but this game seems just fine when its discounted. Its been on sale for $5 through steam and other websites multiple times. I'm guessing it wasn't discounted much this summer sale because of the recent Doom 4 hype via E3.

My biggest gripe is the sewers RoE level where you put on a suit. I thought the muffled sounds were amazing! But in BFG they took those sounds out...

To each their own. I enjoyed this game; original and BFG. I tried modding the original D3; but it seemed too complicated for me and took a lot of adjusting- that I eventually just gave up on it and wanted to just play the game anyway. I'll try out the recent BFG mods; though.

I understand that. I meant, partaining to this topic, is that new versions of videogames, such as remakes, are not always better even though, most of the time, they're. I mean I go with evolution and not stick in the past. All I was doing was agreeing to Fire's opinion on how the new version of Doom 3 was not as pleasant as we predicted. Sorry for the misconception.

I agree with you. Sometimes the originals are the best. Why waste money buying new versions of games(unless you have incompatible hardware because the game is too old) when you can get the original so you can play it the way it's meant to be played. In my opinion; I like to play older games because it gives you a different perspective of what it was like for gamers of a previous generation to play games. To me; it kind of gives you something to look back on.

Except that visually, Doom 3 BFG looks a lot worse than the original Doom 3.

You can't say those of us who dislike BFG aren't supporting evolution of videogames, when most of our complaints are the devolution that took place between Doom 3 a BFG. That doesn't even make sense.
