We are talking about the game producer, John Carmack, that stated video game stories are like porn stories, they're not important, they're just there to move it along.
Seriously, it's just a simple shooter, don't bang your head over it.
This. Hell's in a recession.
First off, the invasion. A lot of ghost souls appear flying around and infect people, however many survive this infection, including the marine. Makes sense, there wasnt enough ghosts.
Second off, hell portal. Audio logs and emails talk about people going though the portal and returning insane or having psyological problems. During the later ones, it is said that other people begin to get effected as well, despite not being near said portal. It is said that betruger is behind this. On another audio log, it is mentions that the effected begin to show physical signs that resemble the everyday zombie you fight. With the invasion the effect gets ampified many times.
Third off, will power. Thoughout the earlier levels it is shown that the marine is fighting off attempts to infect him, along with a mirror scene, where the marine looks at the mirror and sees himself as a zombie. Per ingame evidence with the infected being mostly civilians, it seems rather likely that wil power seems to be related.
Obviously this is designed as a necessary plot device. If you absolutely need an explanation, you can look at it as if those who were easily corrupted had made deals with the devil or something.
When he gets there, he snaps. He succumbs to whatever schizophrenia or paranoia was going around the base. This is why few friendly marines/security are encountered, they're trying to stop him from killing all the civillians. The demons are all hallucinations, like the satanic imagery. It's all part of his psychosis. He identifies Betruger as a villain due to his appearance. Swann and Campbell are actually trying to evade him, which is why they always seem out of reach. It's a flawed theory, I'm still trying to figure out why Kelly contacts the marine frequently, but it explains all these scientists etc. who don't seem to have the slightest clue about what the hell (no pun intended) is going on.
But it explains all the demons, dreams, hallucinations... etc. He kills Kelly because Kelly eventually gets to the bottom of what he's doing and tries to stop him.
As it turns out, the Doom 3 Marine was an avid player of the original doom, which is why he hallucinates the demons as they are.
