Any Realtek users? PROBLEM SOLVED - SURROUND WORKS
THE SOLUTION IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MESSAGE

I have some problems with my Realtek audio - it doesn't work properly in Doom 3 BFG. Need help and advice.

I have a Realtek HD Audio (ALC889) connected to my 5.1 receiver via coaxial digital output (labelled as optical in Sound options in Windows).

The game detects my sound hardware as supporting 2 channels only. However, 5.1 works great in other games and films.

Fresh drivers don't help.

Does anyone have similar problems???

I have read that Realtek users encountered almost the same problem with CoD: Black Ops.

Can my x64 system be the cause?

Thanks in advance.

THE SOLUTION (quite easy, just detailed):

1. Find the XAudio dll files in the WINDOWS folder (you may use the Search thing);

2. If you are using an x64 system, the files may be 'paired', for example: you have one XAudio2_0.dll located in System32 folder and another one located in SysWOW64;

3. Copy the files from both the folders in a safe place and put them in the folders that would let you distinguish the files from System32 and SysWOW64. These files will be the backup, DON'T OVERWRITE THEM in future!

4. Make another set of copies, you will edit them;

So, now you have one folder with the backup files that are divided into two groups regarding their original locations and another folder with the same set of copies for editing - the folder where the work will take place.

5. Get an HEX editor if you haven't got one yet. I found XVI HEX editor very convenient for such kind of task.

6. Open one of the files that are supposed to be edited in the HEX editor and find there the line: 4D069FF12C08274EBC736882A1BB8E4C00000000

7. OVERWRITE this line with this one: 260E87E4C53CD24CBA46CA0A9A70ED0400000000

8. Save the changes in the same file.

9. Repeat the 6, 7, 8 for the rest of the files.

10. Copy the edited files to their original directories in the WINDOWS folder.

11. I'd recommend you restarting your PC before trying the game.

12. Remember to switch on the subwoofer ;)

Enjoy :)

Before I got the BFG Edition, I wanted to get 5.1 from the classic D3. I needed to get the audio card working with OpenAL and, as far as I remember, those drivers from Russia were no use in my case. Then I got BFG, and here it is XAudio, a little bit different thing. I dunno, maybe I was just tired of searching for the solution and didn't come back to the idea with kX drivers. I just wanted to try the surround in classic Doom3, and I needed something that would work with OpenAL, so I needed to try it with XP.

Cool. A sound comparison between games re-releases is not something you see every day

Anyway, no wonder kX drivers didn't work with EAX/5.1 pass-through.
Though daniel_k's ones are pretty fine and should just work (this is the readme)

And iirc doom 3 openAL engine was introduced with 1.3 patch.
But who knows? You could even try to listen to the original DS3D version for pros

EDIT: sorry for the bad layout but steam was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with links

Thanks for the info. Though I have Doom 3 working properly now, thanks to your link, and there's no need to rack myself with all these drivers and things =)

this will help this is for doom 3 regular with the expansions installed but the same settings should work on for the bfg.

I can confirm I have 5.1 surround sound with realtek on alienware alpha by going into settings and selecting surround sound

fully working also the ram patch is located in this as well the ram patch removes doom 3's 2 gig ram limit so the game can run smoother and faster have used both no viruses or malware
