No, you can't play Brutal DooM directly through DooM 3 BFG Edition, although as the guys say you can get a source port and play with the classic DooM wads that way, not that'd you'd want to of course as they've changed it slightly. The only thing you'd want to grab from this version of DooM is the Nerve.wad file which has the No Rest For The Living addon for the console port of DooM 2, for the wad files for the other games i reccomend getting them elsewhere, you can get a copy of the pure PC version of DooMs 1 and 2 on Steam i think aswell as Final DooM. The Steam version of DooM 1 has the bonus campagin from the Ultimate version of DooM 1 which is missing from this version of BFG Edition.
That is one of the many reasons not to get this version of DooM 3, not just because Zenimax has touched it but i think it's the only "official" DooM game that hasn't had an ID dev team behind it as i'm pretty sure Bethesda are the people that made this version of DooM 3.
I'm afraid that's not entirely true.
You *can* nab the DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD files from BFG Edition's folder and put them in your GZDoom (or Zandronum, if you use that, I haven't tested that) and run that with the BrutalDoom mod - I've tried. It's odd because the WADs provided by BFG Editon are PWADs, but you can still run them as IWADs. You may need to specify them with the -iwad command line parameter.
And yes, they are the BFG edition, as if you run them on their own, ZDoom/GZDoom refers to them as "Doom 1: BFG Edition" and "Doom 2: BFG Edition". It's worth noting that ZDoom supports MAP33: Betray, so you can access that level from MAP02 (you know, instead of being booted back to MAP01, thanks Bethesda).
Also, I do believe that Thy Flesh Consumed (the bonus episode) does exist in the BFG Edition.
Although you can't run BrutalDoom straight through BFG Edition - you will have to download GZDoom. But at least you don't have to buy DOOM II: Hell on Earth to experience it, right? BFG Edition just doesn't support any of the new things that fans have added to the engine. You're likely to crash the game while trying. If you want to try mods in BFG Edition, first of all don't, and secondly, you will have to merge the WAD you want to try with the one in BFG Edition. Be forewarned though, it's very likely that it will crash. Then again, I've been able to just drop PLUTONIA.WAD and TNT.WAD in just fine...
In short, yes, DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD from BFG Edition can be used in ZDoom-style source ports. You should be able to pop that into your GZDoom and play BrutalDoom like that.
Then again, you've already had this discussion so why am I here...
I suggest that you give Project Brutality a shot as well as BrutalDoom. It adds so much to BrutalDoom.
Ah, yeah, forgot. If you use DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD from BFG Edition, you will be using the assets from the censored modern ports for Doom, which remove the SS Troopers (and nazi imagery) and modify graphics on the healing items (as mentioned by Hinsonator). The secret levels have their censored names (IDKFA and KEEN), and the music for both levels is DOOM. At least you get to play MAP33: Betray, right? And ZDoom supports it better than BFG Edition did.
This kind of thing should not be encouraged.
Also about the co-op mod, i was personally hoping to get a BFG Edition version of the DooM 3 mod Open Co-op but as this game doesn't support modding that's impossible.
Let's not forget how they modded certain parts of the classics DooMs such as changes to the two secret levels in DooM 2 and the lack of a fourth campaign on our version of DooM 1.
Although the DooM 2 wad does include the betray map exclusive to the Xbox edition of DooM 2, although you can't access it through BFG Edition but as Evil said you can access it througha source port, so i'd say it's a good idea to either find the original map pack it's from or find a way to extract it and put it into a modded wad so you don't have to put up with the changes in the BFG Editions versions of the classic DooMs.
On top of that, BFG Edition doesn't have Final DooM.
It's great value as long as you're into Doom 3 - not so much if you only want to play the classics. You can get the Doom Classic Complete for $20, and it contains Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and Master Levels of Doom. The idea is that you nab the IWAD files from those games and drop them into a source port. I'm sure you already know that though
