Anyway the difference is quite huge between vanilla and Hi Def BFG, Hi Def just doesn't want to jump into your face shouting "look at the textures!" like SikkMod does. It's about overall image quality and atmosphere and less about individual texture quality.
It misses a lot of textures too. To each their own. It's not going to hurt to try it. It's not the big of a difference to me anyways.

The crap part about a large high res screen is if a game isn't meant for higher res, it sure the hell shows 3' from the screen.
Just came here to thank you. Wanted to play this game with more current textures but also unlock achievements. This trick about fooling steam into thinking it's the original exe was on spot.
Edit: The joy didn't last long. While the steam overlay works, the achivements don't work. Should have kept reading the thread... The mod's exe doesn't have the achievements coded in...
Already played original doom 3 running absolute mod. So the main interest on playing bfg was the chieevos. I don't think i can tolerate the ugly textures though...
