What is 3D mode for?

I don't get it. Do I need 3D glasses for it to work right?
Do I need a VR headset, maybe?

BFG edition natively supports 3D Vision and alike tech.

There's no native VR support but ports are available like Doom 3 BFG VR https://github.com/KozGit/DOOM-3-BFG-VR .

You also need a display capable of 3D, I think.

For 3D TVs. Some of those TVs required glasses, not all though. I don't think 3D TV is a thing now though, it was replaced with regular VR.

3D Vision is a now outdated Nvidia tech where special monitors and glasses were used. 120 Hz monitors would output image for the left and right eye one after another and glasses would synchronously dim either left or right eye. In the end each eye would get its own 60 Hz image and you'd see 3D game world behind the screen. Quite a lot of games supported it at that time.

Helix mod blog ( https://helixmod.blogspot.com/ ) still provides support and fixes for different games for 3D Vision. If you find such display/glasses you can get it to work with a special driver https://helixmod.blogspot.com/2022/06/announcing-new-geo-11-3d-driver.html

There were also other 3D displays like Iz3D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IZ3D with passive glasses. IIRC it had different polarization for even and odd lines(of pixels). And instead of half refreshrate on 3D Vision you'd get halved vertical resolution on a Iz3D display.
