Help with running mods without rbdoom 3
I'll try to make this as short as possible, but some context will be needed.

I am trying to run the UltimateHD mod on my laptop. The mod works fine, but the framerate is reduced too much. On the regular BFG edition it runs perfectly, but with the mod it is nearly unplayable. I have turned off HDR, soft shadows, postprocessing effects, and forced ambient, but still only get around 20-30 frames in combat, which is not enough for this game and even less this mod. What affects the performance so much seems to be the rbdoom 3 mod exe-file that is used.

I usually solve things like this on my own but I have found absolutely nothing on how I can turn off the engine upgrades in the rbdoom 3 exe-file. All other mods also seem to use the same .exe with the same upgrades. I have also tried to run the mod from the original BFG edition but then textures, videos, and some other things do not work. Also, the high-res textures doesn't seem to make any difference, so I would really like to use those.

So, I am at a loss right now for what to do. If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated, though I cannot buy another laptop right now since I am unable and don't have a gaming pc.

Thanks in advance.

Sadly many of those mods are using file formats that are not supported by the original exe. And in some cases they might use in general things that only rbdoom (and derivatives (BFA)) can support. Modding just the original exe would require to port all those assets to the same formats that the original resources files use.

Thanks for the reply.

I am aware that the original BFG .exe does not work well since I already tried that. What I was looking for was how to turn off the graphical effects of the rbdoom 3 exe-file, either all of them or as much as possible. What really hurts the framerate is not HDR, soft shadows, or such, but the new lightning that is used everwhere throughout the game. Basically I'm wondering if I can play the mod .exe with the original BFG lightning.

Thanks again.

Have you tried DOOM BFA? It's a fork of RBDoom originaly focusing on Classic DOOM. Nowdays has various improvements for all 3 games and various RBDoom graphical settings on the Settings Menu UI in the game

I have looked at the BFA mod before but never tried it. I found no references to it making the lightning optional and most grapics settings seem to just be HDR, soft shadows, and such, but in the menu instead. Anyway, it seemed so absolutely massive in scale, the whole mod, and the instructions were confusing, so I thought it would be better to not bother with it. Also, I did not want to make the base directory too cluttered or risk causing any problems by adding all of the .dll files.

Do you think BFA could improve performance? Do you know if it has any differences to the default graphics of rbdoom 3?

What is so difficult about it's setup just put them in the game's folder and call it a day (base_BFG and base_NEW is mostly some extra stuff). Also there is an installer which makes the whole thing easier
As for the dlls, doesn't rbdoom has also those dlls?

TBH I don't think so that much, 2 main differences that it has is that by default has lower soft shadow level of detail and belive me, it has a huge performance difference with soft shadows. And it has support for the OG Doom 3 metarial scripts.

It's a bit more complicated than that. All of the dll-files in the BFA are of a new version and I guess I must remove the other ones first then. I downloaded the BFA to look at it before, and there are four or five .exe files in there. I don't even know which one I am supposed to use.

Honestly, I don't want to have to tweak all of these graphical settings anyway. I really just want to play the original BFG version with all of the modded gameplay. Is there no way to do that?

Thanks again.
