Doom 3 BFA breaks shadows, help!
I really want to play with the source port, but for some reason when I install the BFA, it just makes the shadows look ugly, vanilla Doom 3 BFG has them looking normal, but BFA makes them try to make different shadow "blocks" on all different geometries of characters for instance, where when a character is moving around, the light/shadows shift in this horrendous blocky looking way on each individual segment of their low poly models.
The Soft shadows doesn't really help much, it smooths out shadows on characters, but makes environmental shadows have this awful broken looking dithering effect where it's subdivided in multiple gradient segments over smooth surfaces.

Tried messing around for more than an hour with different values for the r_shadowmap cvars, to no avail.
Why is it so broken? I've seen other people play BFA on streams with functional shadows without these issues.
Installed D3BFG, deleted previous configs, started vanilla just ot be safe so that it would create normal configs, ran the first minute and saw that it looked normal, quit, installed BFA, installed the open platform thing, also renamed the BFA exe to normal D3BFG exe so that I wouldn't have to jump through extra steps to launch it.
Was that wrong?

Have you tried Soft Shadows?

I did, as I said, it made shadowing look fine on character models, but bad in the environment.
Here's a album of screenshots to showcase it.

I can recommendate this mod:
https://www.moddb.com/mods/cstdoom3-bfg
Author fixed major bugs, problems with shadows, restored some of the cut features of doom 3. You need to see it:

That looks really neat, but I downloaded the file, looked into it, and got immediately overwhelmed, a bit dauntingly complicated looking setup that I fear will probably also break if I somehow managed to even break BFA :'D
Also I suspect that is less open to modding and not compatible with BFA or Steam Achievements?

Yes, he has the achievements in game, not steam. It's worth it if you want to see the fixes in the game.About support mods, i dont know, need to look at.

Ah I thought I was the only one experiencing the shadow problems in BFA...

Noticed that there was an update to BFA edition, no listing of this issue being updated, but I did notice that someone had listed on the github page a very similar bug report, with the artifacts on suft shadows.
Unfortunately I also had the bugs as screenshotted with soft shadows off.

I'll keep an eye on this, won't reinstall D3BFG yet though, doesn't quite seem worth the hassle.

Issue still occurs, two options brake shadows - SSAO and Soft Shadows. I have strange artifacts on models in cutscenes, and shadows on walls looks familiar to these previously mentioned here.
