For the old Non-BFG-Edition of Doom 3 there are a couple of mods as well for this purpose.
I would say it´s worth a try; the Mod for the Super Shotgun and the Grapper is only about 11 kb small; maybe just save the old file when the mod tries to overwrite it, and paste it back if it shouldn´t work /causes problems. Of course only if the Mod-file attempts to overwrite an old file in the first place.
