Can't help you with the reason why, but I'm having the same problem. I just get 'preparing to launch game' and then nothing more ... bought it this weekend.

Same deal here, I launch it from Steam as any other game, but then both of my monitors just go black and the PC stops responsing. I'm forced to reset computer.

Specs:
i5-3570K
16 GB Ram
GTX 670
Win 7 64bit
Same prob for me Kennethkk

Just saw in another thread. If you go to your steam folder
programs/steam/steamapps/common/thewalkingdead
rightclick the exe file, choose properties, compatibility, and then choose to run it as win 98/ME, then it starts.
It started for me, but now it's time for dinner, so no trying to play it :D

I had the same problem. Turns out it was my 360 controller that was the issue. If you ahve one, try unplugging it before launching the game.

Thank you Almon, this was my exact problem. Turning off my 360 controller allowed the game to launch.

It used to work WITH the 360 controller though. It doesn't recognize the controller after turning it back on. I want to replay this now for the 400 days and season 2 episodes. Don't really like mouse and keyboard with this one. Is there any solution?

Actually, after launching it with a mouse only, leaving the game and starting it again, this time with the controller back on, it seems to somehow have fixed itself. What I also did was start it with the controller from big picture mode. But after that first time it also works in desktop mode.

If you do uninstall and reinstall, make sure after an uninstall, that you manually delete the game's folder so that no files are left in it, then reinstall it.

Try to validate the game files by right clicking the game in your steam library and clicking on properties near "browse local game content".
Delete the steam cache folder in the steam folder.
Also go to the game's properties in steam, click browse local game content, find the .exe file and right click on it, click properties, remove "blocked" and click apply, find the compatibility tab and click run as an admin, try this first, if that doesn't work, try to set it to run with windows 7 or maybe xp, don't forget what you set here.
Also right click on the steam.exe file and go to properties, set it to run as an admin.
The steam cloud, could also cause issues, try enable/disable of that option.

For many game and pc issues, if you have a desktop pc, and it's decent, and for some laptop issues with drivers and a few other types, as well as starting up games, looks and performance in many games, try my guide.

Here is a link to my guide.

Even if you get it fixed, make sure to go through everything in the guide, read through it all and try what it mentions, and download everything.
