UNPLUG YOUR CONTROLLER!! (if you have one that is... telltales games always ♥♥♥♥ up when a controller is plugged in...same problem with pokernight 2)

What do You mean by unplugging the controller? I have myself a PC and Win 7.

This FIX worked for me, Thanks for Posting!!! For Windows 7, you can find the file here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\The Walking Dead\
Then Apply said Fix.

My friend helped me fix it. Here do this.
Try right-clicking game's executable, which is WalkingDead101.exe, and then click Run As Adminstrator.

If it's still not working, right-click the game's executable, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and then check the options to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98/ME. Also check the option to disable desktop composition.

If a lot of you are using a controller, unplug it and it should work. For some reason mine didn't start til I unplugged it.

If you are trying to USE a controller plugged into your computer such as an xbox controller, unplug it and it should work.

Yo. I think I found the fix. After hours of troubleshooting here's what worked for me. I am now playing TWD on compatibility mode Win 7 64 bit.

1st. Found steam application/right clicked/ compatibility/ realized my compat was set to vista. In order to change that searched "regedit" then found file

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers\C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe

and deleted it. Then I was able to change Steam compat to Win 7. Don't close your regedit file just yet because in that same file was a Walking Dead file. I deleted it.

Restarted steam and boom. Everything works. THANK GOD. Hope I helped someone who was as pissed off as I was.

I tried this, and followed your instructions exactly, and i am still getting that error.... can anyone help?!

I tried all of these and none of them worked. I thought I would never be able to play it again but it worked fine when I just manually opened walkingdead101.exe in my files folder. Hope this helps someone.

Okay I've tried everything here except the regedit thing because I do not have the same sub folders for some reason. Anyway, nothing worked. But, just today I was browsing my documents folder and saw 2 Telltale Games folders. I deleted the most recent one and then went to the compatibility tab and checked "run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Windows ME" as well as "disable desktop composition" and "run this program as an admin."
Yes these 3 things had been stated before, but the game did not work when I did these alone. I had to delete the most recent TellTale Game folder. Now, please BE AWARE that I had no previous saves and I assume that this is where my saves for the game would be stored. By deleting one of the two folders that were conflicting (or so I assume) with one another, I was allowed to start playing the game again.
I don't know if this will help others. It might just be pure luck or a fluke. And I will update others in a few days on whether or not this fix is temporary or permanent. Also, for reference this was on Windows 7 64 bit home premium.

It didn't help me. Still the same thing as before. :(
Tragically_Comedic 16 out. 2013 às 19:36
Nope, still not working for me either. Followed the regedit method as well, and got all the way to the Layer folder, but there was nothing there.

My HDD is partitioned into two: one for my Window's install and all that necessary crap, the other for my games. I don't know how this would affect anything, but so far TWD is the only game I own on Steam that will not work. I've been trying every single method/fix that I have come across since the game came out, and not once have I been able to play it.

This will be the last Tell Tale game I ever purchase.
