Carley and Doug are almost the same in terms of their screen time and benefits. However, Carley offers slightly more dialogues than Doug. Carley knows about Lee's criminal past and Doug does not, so Carley would discuss it in private with Lee.
In Episode 3:
Carley offers some MAJOR benefits over Doug:
In a shootout with the bandits and an escape from the motor inn, Carley is significantly more useful than Doug. Carley uses her gun to take down about half of the attacking bandits and zombies by herself. Which means Lee - i.e, you as the player - would have to deal with fewer bandits and zombies during the shootout and escape. The shootout and escape sequences are actually some of the tougher actions in the entire game. Carley is a big help in them. On the other hand, Doug does NOT help in anyway at all during the shootout and escape. Doug is completely USELESS during that fight and escape. Carley does make those action sequences easier for Lee.
MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Carley knows about Lee's secret past. At this point she would encourage Lee to be honest and come clean with the rest of the group. Carley suggests that Lee should tell the other survivors about his past, before Lily can take advantage of a situation and tell other people first. Carley's suggestion opens up additional dialogue options for ALL the other characters, which allows Lee to reveal his past any or all of those characters. (I would suggest you let Lee tell everyone - Clemantine, Kenny, Katjaa, and even Ben - but NOT Lily for the best outcome later.)
And, of course, Carley offers a potential romance subplot for Lee, albeit a short-lived one. Doug does not.
So. The differences between Carley and Doug are very significant in Episode 3. I would recommend picking Carley over Doug just for the options of letting Lee be honest and reveal his past to other characters. Carley allows Lee to do that. Doug does not.
But Doug is way more awsome.....
Carley is active and quick-thinking
Doug is kind, loyal and an inventor. Even Clem thinks he's cool.
He just seemed like such a nice guy, and I panicked due to shock.
Yeah Carley's battery dilemna was pretty stupid but we got some genuinely hilarious moments as a result. TBH Doug yelling "did you find them yet!?" even though there was a group of walkers like right next to us was a lot more stupid in my books.
I can accept how some people left Carley to die because she knew Lee's secret, but ironically that later becomes the biggest reason to save her. In ep. 3 if you saved Carley you get to tell the other group members about your past (getting a lot more dialogue as a result), Kenny doesn't get pissed at you for withholding the information, and you get a snazzy romance subplot to boot. And if you saved Doug you get to ... learn about the chemical composition of chalk?
I liked Doug though. He had a "brighter" personality than Carley and he was kinda funny. It was cool that he sacrificed himself for Ben too. But he really got shafted, even TellTale said they failed with Doug. :(
