But,, I'll explain why.
HP is King.
You get far more survivability from health than anything else, so you should only mod for defence once you have 2 health mods same goes for resists, as most dmg is physical id say defence is more important than resists.
Shields largely suck outside of Kyle, maybe Enzo and if you are using what I am sure is a bugged ajax build.
As for components, again, you want HP first, id say you want to aim for a minimum of 10k health on any character.

Roughly speaking, you need to double your defence to gain 10% further dmg reduction, that is 10% of what you have not flat, so at
1000 defence you'll take 90% dmg,
at 2000 def you'll take 81%,
4000 72.9%,
8000 65.6%,
16k 58.5%,
32k 52.8%,
64k 46.8% etc these are rough numbers, but you get the point, defence is never stronger than more health and as you can see you are into serious diminishing returns by 20k.
If you want more survivability, one of the best mods seems to be the flat dmg reduction ones offering 7.5 or 10.5% reduction (seemingly from everything) with a secondary effect, mp / hp regen boost when you collect orbs etc.
As you can see, only ajax who scales off of his defence for his barriers wants to be heavily stacking defence
You got 1 hit from boss. I mean just normal attack from boss. not boss stomp .
You got 2 hit from normal mosnter lvl 100 - _ -.. @ farm ...
if you think its enough .. You are deathweight for Humanity . and ruin a game.

Defence mods instead of health is an odd choice, I mean, you still only have around 5k ehp like that, it's a pretty bad setup.
